Platinum is a catalyst for the oxidisation of certain hydrocarbons. It is activated by heating the metal above a specific temperature. The catalytic reaction occurs so quickly that it generates the same amount of heat as would be generated if the gas was actually burned in the air.

Platinum, when finely divided, will catalyze hydrogen and methanol oxidisation at room temperature.  Very fine platinum wire was used in matchless catalytic lighters made around the turn of the last century.
