Actually looks like it might be wrought iron, you can see some striations in the surface when its angled to the light a certain way. That and the fact that its two halves forge welded together means it could be old enough to be wrought. A quick dip in acid will tell for sure!

I finally put a new hickory handle on my hatchet 🪓. 181 years old. Military MP hatchet. Looks like it's brand new.
