Anybody know why my starter gear likes to come up and knick the running flywheel at higher speeds underway?

The pinion only spins in one way, the other way it locks. My starter pinion spins both ways hence it can't crank the engine. Need to replace the starter

Mercury 500 50hp circa 1972 outboard had this same problem. After cleaning and lubricating did not fix it, I pulled it apart to find that it does not have a ratchet mechanism inside. It uses a solid rubber tyre that when compressed and I assume some centrifugal force is applied, it grips the inside of the casing. Lubrication is what caused the problem. I cleaned all traces of lubricant and used Electrical Contact Cleaner to ensure everything was dry with no residue. Put it back together and it cranked the motor like brand new. I don't know if my Bendix is genuine Merc or after market. Hopefully this helps some folks out there. Thanks Dangar Stu fort all your amazing videos.

Looking for advice: We are having the exact issue shown in your video, however, our starter is on our riding lawn mower. We took your advice about cleaning and lubricating, but we are still having the same issue as before. Any suggestions as to what we can try now? Thank you!

So what happens if the bendix gear comes out, but still doesn't engage the flywheel? Got a brand new starter, not supposed to have shims, it's for a newer chevy. Bench tested it and everything. It works, bendix comes out it just won't engage the flywheel.

Some folks grease it, I think that attracts grit and becomes a paste. I like the "Clean it, apply dry lube" better.

I'm not sure if you can answer this. I starter motor started failing when engine was hot. Intermittent starts. So I replaced the starter and it started car with massive clunking and banging. I exchanged the first starter and the same result with 2nd replacement. I then compared starters with original and notice teeth on original are far less aggressive. About 15 degrees difference. Is it possible my original starter wore in a way that now the flywheel will only accept the original gear. Honda crv with 530k by the way the 3rd replacement looks identical to first two and came from a different rebuilder. Also can I swap the bending gears? Please help. I'm desperate and depressed. Mind ypu I can replace a honda starter in 25 minutes now.

I got a unidentified johnson looper motor , it says OIS 2000 under the cowling so i think thats the year , cant see the starter bendix , pulled starter , fished bendix out of there , and one circle clip ? Is there anything else holding that bendix on ? A washer or something , circle clip seems like it would pop off wothout a lock or something , my evenrude stsrter has a nut , but it bolts different
