In the course of the 19th century, the University of Bonn, founded in 1818, developed into one of the most important German universities.

In 1948/49, the Parliamentary Council met in Bonn and drafted the Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany, of which Bonn became the first seat of parliament and government in 1949. Subsequently, the city underwent extensive expansion and grew together with Bad Godesberg via the new parliament and government district. This resulted in the reformation of the city by merging the cities of Bonn, Bad Godesberg, Beuel on the right bank of the Rhine and municipalities of the former district of Bonn on 1 August 1969.

After reunification in 1990, the Bundestag passed the Bonn/Berlin resolution in 1991, as a result of which the seat of parliament and government was moved to the federal capital Berlin in 1999/2000 and, in return, numerous federal authorities were moved to Bonn. Since then, the Federal President, the Federal Chancellor and the Bundesrat have had a second official residence in the federal city, six federal ministries have their first official residence in accordance with the Berlin/Bonn Act, and the other eight have a second office. With the suffix Bundesstadt, the federal government is strengthening Bonn as a second seat of government.

As the seat of 20 United Nations (UN) organizations, Bonn has a high degree of international interdependence, bears the title of UN city and is often referred to as the world capital for sustainability and climate protection.
