Oh my, I am only a fourth of the way into this and already ready to love on it. Loving Dan Hicks, having heard about Red Dog Saloon, and being a huge fan of both Mill Valley, the Psychedelic Bay Area scene and such, this is quite a find. The way they dressed and played into the Americana ideal before it really even existed is mind blowing. I had heard Dan played drums for the band but it never occurred to me how entertaining they must have been, from their look to their sound to the whole concept. What we all want is to blend our cosmic love of vintage everything with the unbearable lightness of now. Lo and behold, these guys were holding up old timey music as the blueprint for a sort of soulful revision of American music. It’s hard to find places like the Red Dog Saloon, but I honestly wish there was one in every town. It’s kind what I dream of, where the Tavern is the cultural Oasis for the Keepers of Cool. Dan Hicks certainly was a national treasure, and now I get to see the backstory. Thanks.
Having reached the last bit of the film I am also deeply moved by the sense of values the founders of Red Dog had with Native American interactions. The sense that the false modern utopia presented by the 50’s needed an alternative resonates with me. We all search for values that allow us to feel connected versus alienated, in harmony rather than isolated. Whatever role psychedelics played, the writing was on the wall regardless by the early 60’s. It seemed everyone wanted a new community that embraced nature, expression, respect for the place of consciousness in human progress, and a decision to live by a sustainable and joyful code. I appreciate these pioneers who wanted to move things forward a step, or even half a step.

Some weeks ago I discovered, at my city's library, a CD box set of mostly obscure San Francisco bands called "Love Is The Song We Sing (San Francisco Nuggets 1965-1970)". That set is like the companion soundtrack to this film – many of the "obscure" bands briefly shown here can be heard there. The CD set is long out-of-print, but the odd used copy might be found on Discogs. Well worth tracking down.

Excellent documentary… I was in Virginia City a few months ago and an old timer was telling me this history.. it was new to me.. and this film really did a great job of showing what this place, these people and this moment was about

The environs of Reno have remained a magnet for hip people since the foundational contributions of this scene.
We most all know what is going on northeast of there during summer.

There’s so much history documented in this film. All the upswing of use of psychedelics and modern day psychedelic music originated at the Red Dog Saloon. And I’ve loved the music since the 60s. Still do.

On a family road trip in late June, 1965, we stopped in Virginia City. With it's big, old-fashioned saloon sign, the Red Dog Saloon attracted attention. My parents and my aunt and uncle went inside to check the saloon out. Unfortunately us kids—I was 9 at the time, my oldest cousin was 11 or 12—had to wait outside. I do have a photo in a family album of the front of the building including the iconic dog on the sign. I was amazed when this documentary came out and found out how close we had been to counterculture history.
