2 things: I went to a Japanese restaurant and I didn't know what to get so I just got egg fried rice. Never had it before and the very first bite, it was so amazing, that it didn't have taste. It just tasted like happiness. I've never been blown away by food my whole life until that dish, and I've never had anything that's come close to that one.

Secondly, I was so bored at my grocery job that I just started talking in an over the top American accent. I wasn't allowed to play my music in any way, so I had to listen to the music list that looped. I had to do something, and what I came up with is just talking like that. I live in the Yukon, Canada and no one really noticed or cared that I did it.

It kinda feels like there's sorta tiers when it comes to restaurants. Like, there's fast food joints and food trucks, shitty regular restaurants, average ones, the ones that are sorta universally considered "good" for a particular area, the holes-in-the-wall that nobody goes to but are somehow superior to practically everything else, the stupid expensive places that are good but, like, not really all that good and then there's this one tier of restaurant I didn't even know existed until I was 16 and my girlfriend's absurdly rich dad that really liked me for some weird reason took us to this Italian place that was literally just a completely unmarked wooden door on what looked like a completely blank brick storefront with no windows whatsoever that opened as we approached directly into a single room with a single table.

The entire place was one fucking table and there was only, like, four things on the menu, and precisely zero prices. And also it was all in Italian and there were no descriptions whatsoever. There was just one sheet of paper with the names of four dishes written by typewriter. I asked my girlfriend what the balls I was even looking at and what I should order and her response was literally "it doesn't matter." And I think the most fucked up part was that it actually didn't. I still don't have any idea what I put in my mouth but it legitimately didn't taste like anything I could recognize as an identifiable flavor. The only way I could conceptualize it was that it tasted like joy.

That being said, though, having come from an "Italian family," myself, it did not escape my notice that the entire room had bright red carpet.

Motherfuckers lost fingers in that room.

Butter Chicken is delicious af and if you don't know what you want you can never go wrong with it. Completely agree with Alicia. We once ordered Indian at my Grandmas place and she never had Indian so we told her to order Butter Chicken because we knew she would like it and not have issues with it being to spicy for her.

One time my grandpa went to a greek restaurant and when he pronounced 'gyro' properly the guy at the counter immediately got excited and tried talking to my grandpa in greek. My grandpa is very much not greek. Apparently so few people know how to pronounce gyro in this area that my grandpa was made an honorary greek for like 12 seconds

I'm South African and I do love the taste of Indian Cuisine...unfortunately I inherited something called 'weak ass intestines'.

So I just get mild Butter chicken or Breyani.

Edit: Me when Alicia got to the part about butter chicken

I had a formative experience with Indian food when me and my family were on vacation in England, trying to find a place to eat in London. My parents and siblings wanted Indian, and little 10-ish year old me did NOT want that.

Of course, majority won, so we found an Indian place that a cab driver suggested. It was one of the most plain-looking restaurants I had ever gone to, almost no decorations, and the place was DESERTED. A waiter ushered us into the basement, and gave us a whole booth there.
I don't remember at all what I ordered, but while we were waiting for our food, we were given an entre (Don't remember if my parents ordered it or if it was complementary) that consisted of some crunchy flatbread with a bunch of different sauces we could dip them in.

At this point, it's probably prudent to say that I was the type of kid where even the THOUGHT of spice was too much. I was fine with salt, but if you start talking about PEPPER, I was outta there.

But I conceded and tried the food, and it was SO spicy, but at the same time, it was the tastiest shit I had ever had in my entire life. I was in physical agony because of how low my spice tolerance was, but I just could not stop eating.

To this day, that is a treasured core memory.

I'm a white guy, but I like real food, so I also suss out the whiteness of a restaurant's client base and listen to hear the kitchen, look at the decor, etc. In terms of real life, there's no guarantee, but a dining room full of whitey-whites and soulless decor, music, etc. just about guarantees a Cracker-Barrel version of whatever cuisine it's supposed to be.

Also, when I hit a language barrier, I take it as a good sign, trust my gut, and order whatever my heart told me. This isn't a guarantee for sure, but it does mean my money is more likely going to a business owned by real people, and I'd prefer that. This happens more with street food places, (chaat places for example) but it's so damn worth any confusion or awkwardness! To be clear, don't be cringey by wasting people's time. I like to ask people's recommendations/opinions sometimes, but if they're struggling to understand me, I'll just quickly segue into my gut decision on what to get.

If I'm asked about heat level, I order medium when I got authentic vibes, and spicy if I didn't. (This question is more common with some foods than others, even within cuisines or a single restaurant.) I can handle a decent whack of heat, but I don't wanna be completely distracted from the flavor. (I'm looking at you, dosas!... You back-stabbing, delicious motherfuckers! All like... "Don't worry! My friends are cool." but one of them is a fuckin' psycho with the heat!) I also opt to trust how a dish normally comes if they don't ask for a heat level, or if it's listed on the menu.

Speaking of spiciness, if you struggle with portion control but want snacks, get your ass to an Indian market and try some of the properly spicy snack mixes. It'll be tasty as hell, have healthier ingredients than American snack food, and you won't have to think about portion control because you'll fill up on water and your tongue will hold you back, like, "No, bro! No more! You're fuckin' killin' me, here!" If you love sour stuff, the same goes for pickled vegetables. Find the properly spicy ones and just fuckin' TRY to overdo it! Additionally, at most Asian markets, (Asian in the American sense, not the British sense... Almost feels like generalizations aren't helping anybody...) I recommend spicy fish snacks/skewers, wasabi peas, the spicy Boy Bawang, (Basically, if Corn Nuts weren't trash) and plenty of other spicy snacks... I feel like the spicy ones are less common than at an Indian market, but they're definitely there. Also, in general, y'all could just buy Deggi Mirch and a hot spice powder, and kick up other snacks with it. Bonus fact: If you're not buying dried whole spices or even powdered spices at an Indian market, Asian market, etc. you're wasting your money. Enjoy laughing in the face of spice bottles at a regular grocery store. You're welcome!

Also, did he say Kuch Kuch Hota Hai? Was that a reference to the movie, or was he just sayin' shit? To be honest, I'm the same with Indian (Okay, I'm basic here, so it's mostly Bollywood.) movies as I am with Anime. I branch out some, but also stick with the people I trust... namely Farah Khan, especially when she directs. Also... I've only seen it once or twice, but if you want some WILD potential edge/cringe, check out Koi Mil Gaya... Indian Bob Saget (good actor, btw, but tell me that's not accurate!)... His character is developmentally disabled... until a less ballsack-lookin' ET gives him brain superpowers! I mean, why, but also HOW am I watching this? How does this exist, and who can I blame/thank? Seriously, sometimes it's fun to feel confused... but I feel like the orders for division from on high got us too fucked up to enjoy a little maybe-fucked-up-maybe-just-weird in our entertainment. It's okay to have questions and still be entertained, y'all!

This is already a winding diatribe, so I'll add this... I feel like I should go back to Spanish and actually learn it this time, but I'm pulled toward the languages of India and nearby countries. I'll be in love with English forever, but I feel like there's beauty in various languages from that region which doesn't exist in English. (A little in the musicality of Irish english speakers, but that's just one small aspect.) I played with sounds a lot as a kid, and I refused to stop as an adult, so I don't have the usual roadblocks for different phonemes, vowel sounds, etc. I just struggle with vocabulary memorization foremost, and then not getting too hung up on proper sentence structure/syntax to get real practice in. For example, that last sentence could still use work... but it's fine, really. I've always been so far behind in other languages, but that lust for accuracy is still there... so I get stuck on simple shit and lose the bigger picture. (a picture I down-badly want to see. If you don't understand that sentiment, language isn't boner-sexy... it's brain-sexy. People can be brain-sexy too, but language can't be boner-sexy. I'm not out here hoping to dick down a dictionary. 🤣)

Anyway, I hope that was a worthwhile read. Don't be afraid to let your tongue do some exploring, y'all! You can take that however you want... It stays true, pretty much whatever the context.

I always eat Chicken Vindaloo. From place to place, the level of spice can vary sooo much in this dish. Sometimes they warn you "it's very spicy", that usually means you have the choice between hardly any spice at all or something that will make you cry.

Was he putting an American white people stereotype on a British person? We have so many different Indian Takeaways that a majority of British people I know, know a lot of the orders he asked for and commonly get them but he assumes "ah white person better get butter chicken", think the most common one I see people get would probably be a Rogan josh with maybe some samosas or Saag aloo side. Personally I like a Chicken Phaal, Pilau, onion bhaji and chapati. Yes I know rice AND bread but if I am ordering food or eating in a restaurant I am eating well!

Admittedly I am whiter than white when it comes to my looks, but I would also go out of my way to find authentic indian restaurants in Britain, which admittedly can be a mixed bag as we have a huge amount of both Indian and Pakistani restaurants opened by immigrants form those countries over the past 50+ years. You know you are getting the best food when you walk in, every other patron are either from or descended from families of those countries and they stare at you with a 'what the hell are you doing in here' vibe.

Bonus points if when I open the menu and half the items on there I do not immediately recognise (though that is difficult in UK these days as a LOT of Indian cuisine has filtered into our daily lives over the past few decades and most takeaways and restaurants are catering for both sides of the coin: authentic menu and western menu)

I love tacos, burritos, fajitas, enchiladas, souvlaki, shwarma, pizza, and pasta, as well as many other kinds of food. Hell, I just love food in general. Don’t get me wrong, Indian cuisine is amazing too, as are many others, but it’s not a favorite of mine despite the fact that I do enjoy it.
