Lenovo Thinkpad e16 AMD (2023) In Depth Review - Why Spend More??

I would like to know which one to choose between these thinkpad e16 gen 2:
Intel 125h+8gb ram: USD783
Ryzen 7535hs+8gb ram: usd716
Or,
Victus 16 Ryzen 8645hs+ryx4050+16gb ram: usd650
My main use case is office productivity, photoshop. Mostly plugged-in clamshell connecting to an 27” external monitor and maybe 1-2 days use in usual laptop mode.

i think i remember seeing this laptop at Bestbuy, but it had 16 gigs of ram, and a 1tb ssd. it definitely had a Ryzen 5 inside.

I really like bigger 16" laptop but really hate that numpad and off center trackpad. The ones which don't have these are just too expensive.

I bought an E16 gen2 with Ryzen 7735HS CPU. Let me share my (bad) experience.

The overall build was okay, however there was a noticable frame flex if I grabbed the edge of the laptop. The bottom sides were a bit too sharp too, where the aluminum cover met the frame.

My laptop was equipped with the basic 300 nit 1920x1200 screen. The brightness was okay for me, but the colors, the contrast, and the overall quality were terrible.

The red color was orange, the screen was not sharp enough and the LEDs had some flickering too. It was awful. I had a headache and pain in my eyes after 20 minutes of work. A $300 entry Acer/Asus machine has a much better screen. It is a shame. I had the higher level 680M GPU, but it did not help anything.

The PC worked with both Windows and Linux without driver issues, however, I had some screen tearing under both operating systems.

Finally, I returned my E16, and bought an Asus Zenbook for the same price, instead. It has a beautifull OLED screen, Thunderbolt (Intel Evo) connectors, it does not flex and has a better design. The only downside is the lower number of USB-A ports and the missing RJ45 interface. I did not regret the change.

So I do not recommend this PC as it has an awful screen and the build quality has nothing to do with the older Thinkpads or the higher T/P series. It has more frame flex than a $300 Asus Celeron. 😂

got for 530 dollars in india - Lenovo website with employee discount, although not with 1600P , i got with 1080P 100% sRGB 300 nits display, Rest all same config, Ryzen 5 7530U, Samsung SSD Opal TLC 500 GB SSD, 16GB DDR4 3200Mhz RAM, Backlit keyboard, fingerprint sensor, since its 1080p i might get better battery life 6-7 hrs battery life decent for a business laptop.

Just bought one, intel version was on sale here. Would've preferred the ryzen for the better iGPU but was not worth it for 200 euro more.
Crazy thing is I looked up the benchmarks of the laptop I5 chip and it's about the same in performance as my desktop I5-12400F. So technically there's nothing stopping me from getting this thing hooked up to a dedicated GPU and turning it into a bit of a gaming beast!

After watching this review I promptly went over to Lenovo but I was too late, they no longer offer the options that you mentioned. So I subscribed to follow you closely in the future. Great reviews, thank you.

For the record you can get thie Ruzen 5 base config for under 1000 CAD on the CDW website. They technically sell to businesses but they don't give a fck if you only buy one. Oh and it's spec'ed up with a freaking LED WUGXA 300 nits display!!!

Hi! I'm considering buying one of these - ThinkPad E16 Gen 2 (Intel) or ThinkPad E14 Gen 6 (Intel). I'll be using the laptop for basic stuff - Excel, internet, video etc. I've used E14 in the past and have been extremely satisfied with its keyboard layout. Don't know how typing on a 16 inch E series feels like (because of the number pad). Which of the two offers a better typing experience? Also, how does the palmrest feel like in the E16 model? Overall, which one do you recommend?

All I need is a laptop that's works perfect and this model with your recommended upgrades appeals to me as my next goto machine.

i was thinking to get T16, but since the ram is soldered, thats some sort of set me down on it.

And the back heat exhaust is obstructed by the screen, always a bad idea for laptops. No thx.

My machine has 40GB ram and 2TB SSD I wish I could set the UMA higher then 4.

Can I ask, is this good for coding? I'm looking for a laptop that can handle heavy coding, by heavy I mean emulator, docker, terramind, IDE, etc running at the same time. I know that GPU is not that needed for coding and not gonna use it for games obviously, just need an affordable laptop that could handle my needs and do task without having performance issues.

I use this laptop at work with a ryzen 7, the keyboard isnt as good as the t450s but I really like it.

I bought a P17 Gen 1 (2020) $330 (tax+ship) replace C Drive and bought an A/C adapter ($30) and X1 Carbon Gen 6 (2018) for $126, Total less than $490. I think it is really a better deal. I also have a T580 for $160. but I think 15" is just too small for home use and too big to carry around. I also carry a portable power bank ($15) which can provide 20V, so I can keep my X1 Carbon battery to last longer, which is around 80% health, so I just want keep the cycle as low as possible. All it needs is to last 3 years, by 2028, I can get 2024 Lenovo. I also has two P70 (2016) still running great. P series can run 10 years no problem if you don't have critical needs for performance. If you never own X1 carbon, you should try it (just hold it in your hand, you will know what I meant.)

When I go to Lenovo's website to purchase I only see a choice for business or student purchase across the board. Am I missing something?

Just FYI, I tried a 2x 48G Crucial RAM kit for 96GB. After much swapping and trying, it appears (at least on this BIOS version), 96GB will not post. A shame. -This was the Core Ultra Intel model
