There are terrible people everywhere. Unfortunately, our hobbies seem to attract a lot of them.

I used to like Metal music but metal fans are so obnoxious. I only listen to industrial metal because it isn't gate keepy at all. Industrial metal is so open minded that it has hip hop from time to time.

I have one, what's the game that got the worst evolution. I played 40k, d&d and magic the gathering since the 90s, and personally think that magic aged like milk, in its art, lore, players and game mechanics.
I'm curious about other game systems like yu gi oh, pokemon cards and games like vampire the masquerade

I can’t speak from personal experience but for Yu Gi Oh I understand there was a card called “Yu-Jo Friendship”. It would require your opponent to accept a handshake if you had another particular card in hand. People would purposefully make their hand as gross as possible before forcing a handshake to try and get the referee to penalize the other person. They had to change the rule to accepting ‘the concept of a handshake’ instead. Idk how else to say this but if a significant number of people tried that in a tournament setting, you might have a bit of a toxic culture problem.

I reckon tabletop board gamers (Catan, Wingspan, Scythe, Cthulhu Wars, etc) are probably the best customers.
Why?
Because not one single hobby nightmare, ever, mentioned board gamers!

Thankfully the TCG guys are in the store above us though.

I stopped at a random card shop last Christmas season to pick up some Pokémon boosters for my best friend's kids and there just so happened to be a Yu-Gi-Oh tournament going on. Yikes. Can confirm, they do infact smell.

Just joined the 40K community and I almost shed a tear at how nice they were to me. I was just a visitor but never felt more welcomed into a place. They even asked me if I would be back soon and my heart broke when I couldn’t give an exact answer. I’ll be visiting them again in a couple weeks with my completed 2K army. The mtg players definitely funked up the place tho lol

Shop owner in Virginia. Used to run the Spikey bits channel/website.
I helped him move once. "Support local business" and all that.
The reward was a dinner at some local tgi-fridays or whatever. I didn't go to the dinner. Had other commitments.

Came into the shop the next week, and he high fived and hugged me, thanked me for the assistance. Asked if I could have a couple sodas on the house for not spending his money at the restaurant. Dude said "no", and that I forfeited any remuneration by not going to the dinner that night.

Dude's ungrateful scum; never went to his store ever again, and I'll talk smack on him even to this day.

Worst in my LGS is unfortunately Yu-gi-oh players, they order tones of take-away and make the whole place smell like someone setup a kebab shop in a locker room. Played 40k for years but just got into MTG, my local MTG players are great, most also play 40k. Believe its got to be down to the environment, if your playing in a dirty LGS in a basement its going to attract a certain kind of player. If your in a smart, clean LGS or a Boardgame Cafe your going to get less problems. 'Be the change you want to see' applies here.

I think it depends. Neckbeards and idiots seem to .. migrate? I suppose is the word? Magic and YGO both have terrible players and some have moved to Pokemon but mostly the scalper variety.

I think its because these hobbies have blown up. A new sweep of new blood pushes in new players which also brings in horrific people in the deluge. So terrible people that maynot have been there before are there now.

I think the pandemic may have had something to do with that. It pushed people into hobbies they may not have had before.

Not a game per say, but if a group of paint snobs takes up shop in a game store its miserable. Painting is one of the most time consuming aspects of any models based game and a lot of people have no art bone in their bodies. Its terrible to see some gamer tell a new player that they should, or worse, need to have their new little army they spent a day assembling all painted to a set 3 color standard before they can play with it.

After many years of seeing them, I legit feel like a huge proportion of the people who play TCGs aren't cut out for it.

As in, these are nerds that find the card art cool but in reality they can't cope with a 1v1 competitive game that has cutthroat mechanics, gotchas and lots of direct attacks and stepping on an opponent's toes. The atmosphere in these rooms is always so wound up, pissed off and on edge.

40k is our worst tabletop community in Australia, but never as bad as Yugioh players.

Pokemon is certainly getting up there, most of the population seems to be people looking for a money card or scalping products. Pokemon is a dying card game, needs a serious reboot and increase of card production to crack the market.

Slightly late but you asked for a comment. I played Yu-Gi-Oh and had it as my primary nerdy thing into the first year of Uni, I was never at a super high level, but a level where I went to regionals and one UK nationals between 2003-2007.

In that time I saw:

- Anger over the game boiling over to the point of lads throwing a fist, more than once.
- The casual homophobia (the F-word, the one that's slang for a cigarette over here, was the go-to description of a deck that someone thought was overpowered), sexism, racism, and edgy humour making light of really horrible things was ridiculous. It was like everyone was trying to one up each other in being an obnoxious edgelord who would throw out "shocking jokes".
- Lots of cases of theft and cards being stolen. In one of the regionals I went to, the organisers told everyone, as an announcement with a mic, to never leave anything unattended and to keep their deck in their pocket or on them constantly. People would loop the straps of their bags around their chairs when sat at a table and you had to carry a backpack around you at all times, leaving anything up against a wall was a complete no no. There was an understanding that anything that wasn't nailed down was fair game and your cards being lifted was always on the back of your mind. People even put minimal rarity versions of cards in their decks rather than the shiny versions to make their deck more disposable and low-value, because of card theft being so normalised.
- Ageism. In Yu-Gi-Oh the older teenagers like I was, 15-19, rule the roost. As I was in this group I heard the scathing opinions that this bracket had of anyone younger or older. If someone is a kid and playing the game then this core age group sneers at them and considers them as an easy win, and if anyone is 20 and above these lads sneer at them for being too old to play the game. I remember seeing a comment once on one of your videos saying that there are no veterans in Yu-Gi-Oh and it's so true, once you're deep into your twenties the perception from outside and inside the community is that you're a creepy old dude who shouldn't be playing this any more. This means that there are no hobby dads or older chad equivalents, and the edgy teenage neckbeards, who unironically think Seto Kaiba is an aspirational figure, ruled the roost.
- The game being banned from more than one venue, and an entire shopping centre, due to player behaviour.
- The noise and smell of these places really is outrageous.

I don't regret playing the game, it is fun when you're a teenager if you go in with the right attitude, but you will see the worst of nerdiness and if you're in your twenties and up and you're considering being nostalgic and getting back on board, for the love of God don't do it.

40k the new game im getting into isnt bad ether ive only seen 3 annoying af people other than that everyone is pretty chill & alright they also are really helpful.
Most of the problems ive seen is with MtG players most of them are annoying, has bad BO, complain about everything & act so damn arrogant.
Adventure League its the same leftist & Soy BS so i just avoid them.
I also come from Anchorage and the stories from the same place really sounds like the store ive had problems with rather than the one i always go to.
