I performed a two-man musical play with an actor who was in his early 70s, doing this exact thing. We did it for three years. Finally, he wandered off stage and out of the room during the performance. I sang all by myself. After it was over, I asked him where he went. He gave a vague, indirect excuse for an answer. I knew we were in trouble. Sure enough, he was losing his mind, and four years later, he was gone.
