Bro the instrument u saw with infrared light is a robotic total station (survey instrument) meant to check if final finish of bus is according to the required dimensions and that fittings are meeting the standard (length, width, height) dimensional requirements for production approval. Any discrepancy will lead to that bus being sent back to body shop for correction. This in turn enables the assembly department to assemble the body with other parts produced by other plants correctly to complete the process. Same dimensions are shared with other plants involved in parts production.
