Another helpful video. I've been trying to show some of the stuff you've done videos on to the bjj fundamentals classes when I teach them and I'm hopefully able to get people thinking and doing the right thing earlier on instead of being a purple belt like me and just really starting to learn and understand this stuff. I've been having success doing that sagging headlock when people come up to my waist now and it works great. I think in bjj people come up to the waist because we get away with it and no one punishes it because we feel like that waist grip is such a superior position and we freak out. I also think people are afraid of going to the headlock because we are afraid of getting swept or having our back taken. There are ways of stopping that by not hanging out in that position, but most instructors would tell you not to do it regardless.

Looking forward to the Danaher critique. I'm sure he would say its OK coming to the waist there because you are off balancing the opponent by bending them backwards over the knee.

One question. You mentioned fancy back trips people do instead of the basic mat return that don't work. So one of the ways I take people down is to have the body lock from the back and then I do basically a knee drop Tai otoshi. It works pretty well most of the time but when I roll with like an mma guy I could do it like 3 times in a row and they just keep getting up, so we are up and down up and down forever. Am I doing one of those terrible trips that people should stop doing? Haha.

I think he likes to control the hand that way in hopes that he grabs all 4 fingers because it’s the end of the lever to his shoulder and makes it so they can’t use the fingers on the hand but just a guess

Great breakdown !! I would like to see a mat return video.
So "bodylock" with trapped far wrist (I don't know if we can call this a bodylock) like in the video is fine ?

Would be awesome to see you breakdown some of Bryce Andonian's matches! He seems to do some funky stuff, and it doesn't contradict what you're saying because he seems to ultimately lose to the more fundamentally sound guys at the top, but it is fun to watch!
