I always thought "O G" stood for original game, as in OG Resident Evil, for PS1, not the GameCube.
But it doesn't make sense to say, OG Xbox.
According to Google, OG stands for, Original Gangster, Original Gangster Xbox!
I have 2 of these, but they are non operational, & from what I've heard about notes left from repair tech, certain capacitors decided to turn into suicide bombers on early models, & I'm not sure if the Crystal model is regarded as an early model, I'm gonna dread having to look inside them.
Careful you don't knacker the TV AV connector by resting the consoles weight on it, I've done that before.
Whatever I repair that doesn't work, & hasn't been tampered with, I purposely break the factory stickers, because I'm not a deceptive guy.
Proves that not all factory sticker seals appear complete, haven't been tampered with, or repaired before.
Yes, the belt will shrink, it isn't a permanent fix. The belt will go back to its former worn state within a matter of hours. Always replace suspect belts for new ones, don't bother trying to revitalize an old one.
Don't wanna risk ripping the balls off it!😅
Good content & nice professional work, as always.
A 1F capacitor is 1,000,000 uF which is HUGE in capacitance values. It will take a component tester or multimeter an age to charge that to test. Also, you've no idea how long that XBox was left unpowered so it probably just needs a little while to charge. I'm betting there was nothing wrong with that capacitor. I would have done the "unplug" test with the original cap fitted to see if it works ok.
ОтветитьYou look a bit like the late Bill Ramsey in his younger days.😅
ОтветитьI remember when "see-through", electronics was a thing for a bit; I had a monitor ( interestingly named "Formac")for my Power Macintosh G3 tower (Blue and White)
ОтветитьI've always been of the understanding that if the thermal paste spreads beyond the top of the CPU/GPU die it could actually hold some heat in. I hate those plastic spring clips that hold the heat sink down. I'm always terrified they'll snap! The Crystal case does look nice.
Ответитьhaahah that rap beat cool
Ответитьwhat is the liquid you are using that you drop onto the CPUs to clean the thermal paste?
ОтветитьPMSL
Ответитьafter clicking eject button .. give a slap on drive and it will come out
ОтветитьFu*k me lees games! That’s a blast from the past not the morcombe one but back in the day I used to go to a lees games somewhere near Chorley I think with my dad that’s where we bought all of our consoles and games from in the late 80s and 90s. Good video I’ve randomly watched all of your videos now not in order and some of them have done me some favours. Keep on fixing mate from one pro dodger to another 👍🏻
ОтветитьCoolie Jingus and Monkey Joe are celebrities. They have more songs written about them than 99% of the population
ОтветитьI paid a 5er for mine lol
ОтветитьHey bro my original Xbox still runs and works a video was stuck inside and it still plays perfect ! I got bored of playing the game and then I used a paper clip to open up the tray and after that , my Xbox wouldn’t stop flashing green ! I need help, thank you .
ОтветитьWhere does he find background music that is so horrible?
Ответитьwill you ever be making a vlog on youre console collections
ОтветитьBe careful with playing that cd. You might get a content match! 😂
ОтветитьIf you look on the cap. where the pin is welded with 3 dots there's a minus on the negative and a plus on the positive.
ОтветитьOpening up an electrolytic capacitor will not explode when not connected to power. You might get some yuckie stuff on your fingers, but no explosions.
ОтветитьI have a Dreamcast that keeps asking for the time does anyone know do they have a capacitor or is it a battery?
ОтветитьReparing the OG Xbox is cool, you have a high chance of bringing it back to life!
There are about 5 different major revisions to the motherboard and only 1 of them requires a clockcap installed, othervise it won't even start. The older boards can run without a clockcap, don't bother replacing it. If you see a dull spot around the clockcap, the juice has been released and you really need to remove it and clean up the mess.
Sometimes the big caps around the GPU or CPU can get bulgy (resulting digital screen issues, flickering and such), replace them you should.
Sometimes the clockcap is eating away thin traces alond the edge of the motherboard, the sympthom is that the power and eject button act weird, you need to jump the broken trace and you're good to go.
Check the PSU terminals where you plug in the wall plug, sometimes they can crack if it's the type where the metal prongs are directly soldered to the PCB (later they used wires that ran from the plug to the PCB to remove the plugging-in action's stress from the PCB soldere joints).
The last but most important issue with the OG Xbox is that the hard drives can die and you need to replace it. You need to read the hardware key with a serial reader thingy (easy to make), then you need to initialize a HDD and lock it with the proper hardware key for it to work. This is the most complicated part of a repair and you need a PC for it with the right programs but if you are more a software person, it's not that hard, there are plenty of help online.
Ohh, and a +1 issue is with the optical drive, if they fail, I don't know what to do, because they are custom made for the machine, maybe you can source a laser, I don't know... But you need a drive because on the boot sequence the OS is looking for a drive, without a drive your machine won't boot. Your best bet is to put a softmod on the HDD and run games from it :/
When the drive can't open, it's usually because the belt is slipping and it needs a little more force to break the magnet's force that's keeping the disk in position (there's a puck-like thingy in the middle that's snapping to the center of the spindle when the tray is closed and the mechanism rises, there's a magnet that has the force that the belt needs to overcome). Clean the rotating parts where the belt goes around and maybe you can replace the belt itself if needed.
Info on the supercap: It was designed to withstand a short amount of time without power. If you keep your sytem plugged in it's charged. If you unplug it and put it away let's say for a week, you'll need to set the time again. It's not like the regular CMOS batteries in PCs, it's just a super short temporary solution to store power for the clock settings. In short, if you find that you need to set the clock it doesn't automatically means your clockcap is dead. Look for leaking looking suspicious spots on the board. If you have a revision of the motherboard that doesn't need a clockcap, just take it off and don't bother replacing it. Also, clean the board really well after removing the old clockcap.
ОтветитьYeah that super capacitor is annoying though. Have a mint green one and it needs replacing
ОтветитьI just noticed on this video you use a 5.5V/1.0F capacitor and the original is a 2.5V/1.0F capacitor. Will the extra 3V be ok to use?
Also with the capacitor that you used, have a look at the tabs on them. You will see a (+) and (-) stamped into them. Will make it easier for you next time you need to use one.
Time to do all the mods, like the rPi2 Mod Chip, larger HDD, HDMI and maybe 128mb ram, shame it wont take a 1ghz pentium 3 though, but should be able to make a few video's out of that and have a beast of a console, I used mine for years as a media center with XBMC and XBMC4XBOX which we now all know as Kodi.
ОтветитьNice bargain, this looks so clean. I recently got a v1.4 console sold as working. When I opened it up, the clock cap had leaked all over it. It was so corroded that one of the legs came clean out of the cap when I was removing it. The amount of dust inside the console was unbelievable, you would almost think it was a dust bag from a hoover before I cleaned it.
ОтветитьLove watching your videos 👍
ОтветитьStuck on with thermal paste? Wiggle gently either clockwise or anticlockwise. never up and down.
ОтветитьMotcombe was that wise
ОтветитьSuch a nice console. I would love the halo green, Halo orange, or this crystal one.
Ответитьman do i wish i could find somethin like that in usa :(( i want a crystal, transluscent green, or halo xbox) but they are either completely bricked requiring full transplant or $500usd+
Ответить2+2 is 5 these days.
ОтветитьWould the clock but set auto when connected to the Internet??
ОтветитьSmooth 😊
ОтветитьI almost got myself a crystal when i collected a few consoles but i had some weird nostalgia for the black. Not sure i regret it but man id love to find a crystal too
ОтветитьIf you sold it a guy that looked like you sold it to me for 300$ with modded xcuter I love it but I can't play on it because I don't have a 720p monitor the one I have I have its not smart enough to lower its res
ОтветитьWhat's the liquid you used to clean the PCB to clear out the stains and marks?
ОтветитьYou maybe already know this now, but the replacement cap that you used there has a "+" and a "-" stamped in the legs where they are spot welded to the cap itself. Love your vids, keep up the great work!
ОтветитьGreat Vid, Fantastic Find and repair. The only thing I would of done any differently is change the Clock Battery. (You may have done it off camera) But as you had it open I would of changed it anyway especially with the clock fault. Thumbs Up, will look out for more of your vid's as it was very entertaining and fitted in with my humour. Thank You.
ОтветитьOmg I’ve just watched three of your videos and my ribs are hurting from laughing so much, great fun videos aplenty 😃
ОтветитьMine had kinda the same issue (the disk tray kept opening and never stood still to let the lens read disks). First I opened up the xbox and cleaned the inside which was really dusty. I disassembled the tray to clean it well and put it back. However I noticed ethilic alcool was not working and I tried with vinegar, since I had no IPA, and when I turned it on, the consolle struggled, then the led began to flash in orange. The xbox started hyperventilating.
I opened it up again and removed (very roughly, by hands) the clock cap, which was leaking. I put some more vinegar but nothing changed when I turned the consolle on. I've read that it could be the ADM1032 chip (placed on the same circuit of the clock cap), but since this issue never showed up before I used vinegar, do you thing IP alcool could fix the problem?
Your video has been so helpful. Thanks!
Just a quick FYI, when it comes to boiling belts - i've found the putting the belt in pre-boiled water on the hob and then full blast for 10 mins works better than just plopping it in boiled water.
ОтветитьDon't know why and how I came across your channel and never in my wildest dreams would I think anything like this would be interesting, but your skill in fixing things and presentation and humour is fantastic ,also your editing of your videos brilliant .
ОтветитьStupid Times Table
