13 Mar 1918 @ 14h18 Patrol behind friendly front lines over Cheery-Les-Pouilly aerodrome.
Blumenbach lead the flight again with Becker, Martens, Myself, Arnold, Hebel, Linck and Beck accompanying. We arrived over Cheery-Les-Pouilly just as we were bounced by 6 SPAD VII’s. One came down on my tail just as I cut to port and he passed right under me. I swing onto his tail and put his engine to smoking. I then scanned my position in the melee looking for another adversary and one was moving on my tail on the port side. I tangled with him and we circled, each looking for an advantage until he made a mistake and I was on his six sending volleys into his engine until he blewup in mid air wings and parts flying at me scared the hell out of me but somehow I made it through the debris with no damage to my machine or myself. I saw two of the Spads bread for home well above me and so I turned back towards my Kette mates to see if I could assist. It was then I noticed a lone SPAD breaking for home on my starfboard side and just below so I swung onto his tail and started giving him short bursts in hope to slow him down. It took some time but I suspect some of my rounds hit home on his engine as I started to gain on him. Several more bursts and I saw his engine smoking as he dove down to my starboard side. I swung around to check my six noticed another aircraft coming in my direction. It was another SPAD and he wanted to play as we both turned into each other starting a nice circle for advantage. He managed to climb above me and head for home so I let him go. Turning towards Cheery-Les-Pouilly I spotted some of our flak bursts and then spotted a lone SPAD heading for home slightly ahead and below me on my starboard side. I swing in behind him and waited until I had moved in close then gave him several bursts. He quickly turned over and spun into the ground. As I turned back towards base I saw another SPAD heading towards me and above. I turned up into him and gave him a burst at which point he spun over and as he passed in front of my nose I gave him another burst and watched him spin into the ground. I looked around and not seeing any aircraft nearby I headed to Cheery-Les-Pouilly and upon landing found my Kette had all made it safely down. Martens, Arnold and Linck all had light damage with 2 days repair required. I put in a claim for the three SPADS I saw hit the ground. The other two I sent down smoking I could not confirm. My three claims were immediately confirmed as they all came down close to our base. The C.O. advised me that I would be receiving the Eisernes Kreuz 2 Klasse for my duties. We celebrated in the mess that night.
