“I Have Nothing to Hide” – The Dangerous Myth About Privacy

Politicians saying on loop 'I have nothing to hide' is so much a projection it stops being funny. If anyone has something to hide it's those trying to normalize saying 'I have nothing to hide', or 'I do have something to hide, and I don't want to think about my role in privacy's destruction.'

Speaking of "nothing to hide" argument, I use the example of cross dressing to debunk the "you shouldn't be doing it" or similar excuses... It's not an immoral activity in and of itself. Some may consider it in bad taste, but taste and morality are separate issues. It doesn't hurt anyone. But it's not the most socially acceptable activity, so there are people who prefer to keep it a secret. If some guy lives alone in his own apartment, working a regular 9-5 job, pays taxes, acts as a normal citizen... But wants to buy skirts, dresses, heels... And wants to keep his cross dressing practice private... Then why is privacy in that case a bad thing? He does have something to hide, but not because it's immoral or wrong or illegal... But because it's a private thing to do. And as strange as cross dressing may be as an activity to some, we all have something that is completely legal and harmless that we want to keep private, this is just a very obvious example.

NPC: "I have nothing to hide."
Me: "Challenge accepted."
Also educational: "This means someone can destroy your life with only publicly available information about you."
And potentially awakening: "The government decides about that."

Ironically, this didn't start with the government. It started with your own parents. Not the topic of the video; but when you're taught young to not expect privacy, you're more vulnerable.

The thing is most people have no idea how to protect their data and share it willingly with a second thought. I know one thing, only a communist or fascist would demand me to sacrifice freedom for security. I'm sure many good Germans said they "had nothing to hide". But, in reality, when society gets paranoid everyone realizes everything they have to hide. Everything that makes any average person vulnerable to any virulent mob-mentality or mass psychosis like what caused WW2. Speak truth to power, speak power to any nosey authority before it asserts itself too much. The AI revolution and Social Media is still relatively new, so we can still get ahead of it and establish principles as the tech matures.

I’ve been arguing for privacy since I went to college about 5 years ago. People thought I was crazy for being against shady privacy policies and terms of use. I remember telling people about it and getting weird looks. So crazy.
