Growing Sandalwood in India is legal. You can grow Sandalwood tree in your home or farm or vacant land, just like all other trees. But once it gets 7 years old (approx), most of the States forest office has norms for registration of Sandalwood trees, wherein you need to declare the existence of Sandalwood tree which is older than 7 years and surviving in your land. This will be reported to the District Revenue Office, through VAO, Thasildhar, and they will maintain the registry of Village and in the local forest office. You cannot cut the Sandalwood tree by yourself and cannot sell sandalwood trees to anyone. Sandalwood tree will be cut only by forest officials and they will take the entire tree to their custody and they will give you a pre-fixed rate for the Sandalwood tree cut from your possession. The rate will be fixed every year and a 20% deduction of the cost will be taken by the Forest office and the remaining will be given to you by Forest officer. For a sandalwood tree to attain a mature stage of cutting it must be at least 20 years old. Older it grows more the Sandal smell and secretion in a tree. Like all other trees you can also plant Sandalwood tree, but sandalwood tree. Cost of a sapling from local forest office will be around Rs.25/- (in Tamilnadu), Rs.250/- from a nursery, you can take it to your land, plant it, but this Sandalwood tree is like a parasite and its root require some other trees root to suck nutrition from them so that it grows well. There are a lot of real estate brokers and agents who will call up clients saying that this household has sandalwood and its price in crores. Just fancy. All the best for your interest in Sandalwood. The real fact is that you cannot sell a sandalwood tree by yourself, you need a local forest officer's permission. You even cannot chop it off for it is hindering the land, because it will be monitored by the forest office. Otherwise, you are good to go. Few of my clients who had sandalwood trees without realizing that it is a sandalwood tree had made intimation to forest officers and they have come, estimated, given guidance and also settled money after cutting the sandalwood trees in their premises and taken into their possession. Each tree fetched around 5 Lakh rupees on average, and that process was tiresome got settled after a few months. You cannot buy Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Jaguar, Volvo yet you can settle yourself with good revenue for a tree that you have taken care of or let your next generations enjoy its benefits.

Sir is it genuine,what if government bans the selling of sandal wood after 7 years(it is killing and stopping producing food vegitables and vegitaiin for humans and animals by occupying all land for only this paracitic plant which can not produce its own food?also it is a wild plant grows well in forest with different host plants arround and particularly in Karnataka and tirupati area ,is not yet proven in farming in other areas in 12 to 15 years,because it takes 25 to thirty years to get required grade commercial grade wood from it.

Then you have to get the revenue department to certify that the plants are REALLY in your land and the bribing starts again. Then you have to enter them in your RTC Then the bribing continues, Go back to the forest department to number the trees Then the bribing continues further.

All is fine.
