The Salty Black Licorice is Jacobsen’s take on the Scandinavian candy classic. In Denmark, we would probably call this licorice caramel, since it’s made with a base of sugar and butter, even though it’s not as chewy as caramels in Denmark usually are.
The licorice has a smooth, creamy, texture, and a perfect balance between savory and sweet. The anise flavor is rather prominent, which I really like, and the licorice doesn’t have ammonium chloride, which is usually what gives Danish salty licorice its salty flavor. Instead, Jacobsen Salty Black Licorice has a touch of Jacobsen’s own pure sea salt harvested from the cold, pristine waters of Netarts Bay on the Oregon Coast.
I brought a box of Jacobsen Salty Black Licorice with me to Denmark, for my parents to try, and they loved it! In fact, they loved it so much I had to hide the box to make sure there were some pieces left for me too. Made in the US, but approved (and highly praised) by Scandinavians!
