Hi, I’m a rising sophmore and I’ve been looking for extracurricular ideas. I couldn’t do any significant research this summer so I’m attending IRSA at ISU. I don’t really have anything else except taekwondo and band. I’m planning on starting a HOSA club at my school and volunteer at hospitals and maybe shadow surgeons. Is this really enough to get into Stanford as a Biology major?

Edit: I also didn’t do any clubs my freshman year, I didn’t realize the importance till now, will that significantly impact my chances of getting into Stanford?

I had a lot of activities planned for this summer that would have boosted my application, but now all of them are cancelled due to COVID, and I’m worried that my application doesn’t have enough extra curricular activities on it. I’ve done quiz bowl since 9th grade, was in National Honor Society in 10th and 11th, and participate in a school sport, but that’s about it. how important would you say extracurriculars are on your application? I have really good grades and test scores, but I know that won’t make me stand out from other applicants for Columbia, and I’m not sure what else I can do since everything is cancelled this summer.

How do we find professors in our area to shadow or get letters of recommendation from? I’m confused as to whether I should call local colleges around me, or if there’s another option.

I actually see a lot of similarities between us, because my main focuses right now are in science and music, and I plan to do research the summer before my junior and senior year. I had a question about the medical research club you started, as that's something I have actually considered starting up. How were you able to start up this club? And what did you do in it?
