The problem will get worse, once this tech is dominated by foreign firms (a current trend), the political lobby will die out. The US public is dumbing down into a grass hopper mentality. What will happen if the gas price rise up to $5/gallon? The US society will be totally wrong footed and immobilized.

Dudes! Get a grip! Combined cycle gas-fired power plants, nuclear power plants, geothermal power plants, and hydropower plants are all so much better than coal.

People don't understand that these plants emit about 99.99999% steam into the atmosphere. They are extremely clean.

A. "scrubbers remove all the polutants from the flue gas". That's utter BS and he knows it. Reduced emissions is great, but CO2 is put out in thousands of tons per day.

B. A 15% efficiency increase is great, but that's from 33% to maybe 39% before transmission losses.

Coal is cheap, that's the only thing going for it. Natural gas is a bridge fuel, and this plant will likely convert to gas long before it's obsolete.

Everybody cries about being green, yet they drive crew cab unloaded trucks to work with 1 person and then cries about the electric bill the same day. I am all for America energy independence i think to put a hole natural resource to waist is insanity. If coal can be this clean and provide jobs in the process then it should always produce at least some of the energy for our grid. The more options we have the stronger are nation is.

Never heard of the Ultra SC. Gonna look into it. We have 3 SC units in Entergy Mississippi and they were built from 58 to 81 as base load units. Two burned natural gas and high content solder #2 oil and did so economical and efficiently as a base load units. The older has been very dependable and was designed to bite coal slurs as well as the other two but never has. If I ever get that direction I am going to try to contact someone so the manager can possibly get me a visitors pass. I have seen coal operations in eastern Arkansas because I attended continuing training there several times👍🇺🇸🤙😃

American Electric Power is a for-profit company that pays dividends to thousands of stock market investors. If they weren't sending all that money to "investors" they could lower the electric bills for people. The best option is for people to push for locally owned electric co-ops and publicly owned utilities. Then they should work toward weatherizing homes and businesses to make them more energy efficient. Once demand has dropped, it is easier for local smart grids to produce their own energy without relying on massive power plants built by Wall Street investors and banks who siphon off all the excess profits to pay for their mansions and yachts.

John W. Turk facility in Arkansas is listed at 0.6 GW in Wikipedia and uses low BTU Powder River Basin coal that requires 50% more coal by mass than high BTU Appalachian bituminous coal. There were groups espousing as being environmental that were fighting the new plant's greenhouse gas emissions which are mute as greenhouse gas behavior because earth's greenhouse effect is always in saturation from the strong greenhouse gas water vapor and can't have its overall effect changed.

These environmental groups are pushing fraud and likely knowingly so. They succeeded in needlessly increasing the cost of electricity for people much less fortunate than themselves by forcing the purchase of expensive wind generated electricity. Ironically one of the environmental groups was the National Audubon Society where wind turbines are major killers of endangered large birds. The overall appearance is these environmental groups used fighting the plant as a means to enrich themselves.
