And yet, the government was so horribly corrupt eating up American money so the Afghan armed forces, poorly paid or often unpaid, gave up and abandoned the armed forces in droves. They must have thought that the Taliban would take better care of them. Also, the people distrusted the Americans. Perhaps they thought that the Taliban would bring in Islam in its pure form. Well, this is what it turned out to be.
