I think in 1924 there were other characters in Russia more important than Stalin, who where much less known (reading on newspaper of Spain of that period, was not mentioned till 1923).
For example, focus more on Kamenev, who were seen as the more moderated comunist and the best candidate to replace Lenin, Rikov, who replaced Lenin as prime minister in 1924, Bujarin, the main rival of Trotsky ideas and main creator of the NEP, or Zinoview, leader of the Komitern and the most famous comunist in 1924-1925 in all world

Great episode. Nitpick: Lenin's brother a key influence. "Testament" very likely concocted by wife (Kotkin).

Excellent historical review. I wish you would speak just a little slower though.

I read up on Stalin some years ago and thought about what a delinquent he was as a youth. He chose to go that way throughout life wh made me wonder why he was never exposed to other lifestyles that may have influenced him in other directions.

Ends justify means. End of sentence, end of arugement, Comrade. Kill anyone who stands in your way. It can be no surprise that this philosophy lead to too many dead to count. The "Madman Stalin" theory ignores the root cause of this brutality.

Also Socialism isn't Communism. Marx was very clear that Socialism comes first, then maybe this Utopian "Communism" will be born out of that. Marx talks about everyone being equal, free healthcare, education, housing for all, price controlled food/fuel/housing, no one left behind and everyone cared for no matter how able or unable they are. That sounds noble and doable... and yet, we all know how it ends.

This is simply not true that Lenin’s testament supported Trotsky’s bid for Lenin’s successor. Lenin advocated against both of them and sought a third alternative.

"It's not how society has developed" is an odd statement to say about socialism and communism, because...whose society? "Society" is not a global thing, and socialism and communism are a major part of society for more than 1 billion people. Additionally, humans are a social and communal species and have practiced forms of socialism and communism long before Marx existed, particularly in some indigenous groups of the Americas

Lenin: “Hey, tell whoever’s in charge of giving people jobs not to let that jerk Stalin become the next leader. By the way. Who did I put in charge of giving people jobs?”

Aid: “That would be Stalin, sir.”

Lenin: “. . . . . Uuuh ☠️”

The only way Lenin could have made sure that Stalin didn't suceed him was by completely supporting Trotsky. You don't get to say who doesn't succeed you, you get to put in place who does. Expecting a testament to work was assuming he was a monarch of a stable state.

I think you left out that Stalin was a sexual sadist, psychotic mentally disturbed, genocidal mass murderer; with the power to make it happen. He particularly enjoyed betraying inner circle confidants/friends and reveled in their shock betrayal, torture and execution. He directly ordered the Ukraine genocide in the 1920s. His victims were mostly his own people.
Ever pragmatic, Stalin only invaded and occupied border countries. He never ventured to Africa or South America etc. He was not expansionist except in defense of invasion from the west, as it's rumored Patton wanted to do. LOL.....
Stalin wasn't a communist socialist.... He was a king, an autocrat dictator like all the Tsars before him, only worse.
He put an ugly coat of paint on socialism. And he got away with it all.

Another footnote of "the war on communism" is that, while recovering their colonial empires around the world, Britain, France and the USA accused Russia of invading and exploiting other countries. The USSR was terrified of "the bomb" for a long time. People forget that. The USA had it, and soon shared it with their capitalist allies. They didn't give it to their other ally, Stalin, as per the alliance they should have. That's a whole other story.
