Personally, I believe if you fill in the gaps with something transparent you still have a full chess piece that will still look 2d from above and will also give a cool look when viewed at an eye level and you won’t have to compromise the floating pieces since removing makes the piece, such as the white knights, look weird
It would also feel like a complete chess piece when you pick it up, as all those grooves will feel weird and unnatural
