One thing that u touch but don't put into words is that real math, creating original solutions to problems, is an art. Conceptualizing the problems and then changing it into to a good solutions takes a lot of creativity and its not just plug in and jugging a formula. I think that real math being an art rather than an exact science is why many good students actually have such a hard time transferring to industry. I really wish schools taught creativity in math form rather than just using a formula that someone else found. And don't get me wrong , learning the technical skills in math is a requirement to be a logic artist, but saying your good math because you know high level formulas/ how to derive them is akin to saying your good at art because you know advanced techniques like shading and color theory.

The complexity of being a structural engineer is nothing compare with what these guys are talking about, that comparison does not apply. Most of their problems are linear and elastic as well as highly regulated by the DOT's. The level of complexity in these financial/derivative products are non-linear and way more difficult to formulate
