People DON’T WANT GAS ban or no ban. Horse and buggy sales aren’t banned, yet NO ONE is buying them except the Amish. So any automakers hoping a no-ban is going to save them are delusional.

Synthetic fuels are expensive primarily because it's energy intensive to produce them. As the cost renewable electricity plummets, so too will the cost of these fuels. That said, it's still a really stupid idea for numerous other reasons.

It's not the ban that will kill the German car industry. It is Tesla, China - and its own stupidity. 😉

E fuel is the future. Unlike electric, the infrastructure for liquid fuel is already in place and not one job will be lost. It will allow older cars to stay on the road and bring down the cost of new vehicles (ICE is already cheaper to make than electric, plus E fuel ICE engines will not need any expensive emissions tech). Cheaper cars mean more cars sold. An auto manufacturers revival.
And unlike electric, we won't have to burn coal to charge our cars.

Much easier in Scandinavia. They only have to cope with Volvo. And they have stopped sales of ICE cars.

Speaking of smoking, when I visited Germany in 2012 my two greatest impressions were how far they were ahead Australia in renewable energy and how far behind we were in anti-smoking measures. Big companies have serious clout there

Yes or no ban is no problem. EVs just have to be better as Ice and then only a few will buy ice cars. Simply not enough to justify economic production, so premium priced ice versus clean EVs. So just keep going and if small markets start charging more for co2 it's all oke to go green as in Norway today everywhere in Europe.
Anyway the no-change makes all will fade away soon

The saving grace here is that the 2035 ban is irrelevant. By then only boutique handmade racecars will be gasoline powered anyway (the likes of caterham and morgan).

Everyone else will have shifted to electric already. Simply because it is cheaper. Just like with renewables today.

My understanding here in Europe was that 2035 no new ICE to be made, 2040, all ICE vehicles to be removed off the roads. After doing a little more reading it appears they’ve pulled back a little and are now saying 90% of ICE must be removed from the roads by 2040. The objection against these dates for EV’s isn’t being made by forceful argument or reason, it’s being done simply by ignoring the CO2 caps and deadlines. Whilst most here can see that many Legacy auto makers have their head in the sand, that is for good reason, because they believe that if there’s enough of them doing this, they can say that if the EU forces the dates then it would be an economic catastrophe, and you know what, they would probably be right. It’s not because the EU hasn’t planned properly, they have, but because some Legacy auto makers are deliberately ignoring the EV revolution and are laughing at us. They don’t think the EU has the balls to make all those people redundant, and again, they might be right. The fact the EU has wound back 10% for 2040 tells me that in part, the indifference shown by Legacy automakers is having some effect. The EU is doing it’s very best, but up against such massive commercial entities…….. I’m not sure it’s going to be able to stand it’s ground. What WOULD be the killing stroke, would be if EV’s became a no brainer choice for the consumer/motorists. In other words, the consumer sticks the knife in instead of the EU. It’s a pretty cynical attitude in my opinion. Promote the gas guzzlers so they can make more money whilst killing millions of us thanks to their toxic fumes.

the fossil fuel lobby have won, this descion to allow sysnthetic fuel cars to be sold means you perpetuate the sale of this ancient tec the only way to go is to ban them, and now because the big german car companies refuse to go electric, there will be a knock on effect around the world, and the oil copmanies will be selling and people will be buying petrol and diesel cars forever, no matter the world will burn, and people continue to die from pollution all because of money .tesla have shown what can be acheved but the rest of the auto industry dont want to change because the ceis are stuck in the past.this is just like the tobacco lobby of the past les lies and more lies untill they had at last to admit the truth, too late for rhe millions who died from lung cancer though, dont matter though govenments and companies mades billions.

A 2035 is so absurdly laughable, EV's will have absolutely murdered ICE vehicles by then, including those with "e-Fuels". Outside of maybe small niche sub-markets no one in their right mind would buy a gasoline or diesel vehicle by 2035. All that a 2035 ban is going to accomplish is virtue signaling by politicians without advancing EV's or combating climate change in any way.

E-Fuels are a hypocrite non-solution and should be banned. For some classic cars surviving there is still enough gas produced as that will only be reduced to an absolute minimum. By the way Porsche, Rimac-Bugatti and Hyundai Group are in the same boat. Mate Rimac himself said that Bugatti will stay gasoline powered for a longer period of time as well as his electric cars are better in any respect. The super rich however can still decide, it’s now from the same company. The solution however is in systems thinking and so far only Elon thinks differently!

Would be nice that only e-fuel is soldfor all ice cars, new and old asap. And yes there will be no market for ice veciles due to costs much before 2035. However, the complete banned would have saved lots of tax payer money that goes to resreach e-fuel and lies that go with it.

Most of these companies openly supported the build back better gang. They remained silent while their HR, H&S, finances were hijacked. They took the money that led to inflation, moved jobs overseas, flirted with China, were greedy, complicit and irresponsible.

What could have possibly gone wrong.

I'd say your argument sounds a lot like the ev talks over a decade ago and now it's building steam. Who's to say the same thing doesn't happen with e fuels. We are talking about one plant in Chile? The performance in evs is great but what happens when restrictions get another decade and we have ev lambos getting in accidents or I even heard of getting performance package like it's streaming movies where you're renting 1000 hp for the weekend. Sounds ridiculous. And I saw a comment about all younger kids want evs? Dunno the kids that I talk to like rusty old stuff. Or even my 70 charger because fast and furious is their favorite movie. Anyways good debate regardless

Best thing to do is to have multiple fuel options. Some EVs, some e fuel vehicles and some fuel cell vehicles is a good solution. You can’t just solely rely on one fuel source.
