Most of Microsoft's open source projects (VS Code, .NET, etc.) are indeed free software.

I think "freedom", "libre", or "FOSS" are better terms. However, even without the freedom aspect, someone will inevitably fork it to add that element back.

The confusion come from the english language.
"Free" is the same word used for something you don't pay for and for something that is "libre".

I'm french and we do instinctively the difference because these two notions are clearly distinct in our language.

What about ReactOS? Is it open source as in free software?

You gotta make a video explaining the various kinds of open source licenses, if that exists

They should have called it Libre Software. If you have to explain free software to everyone you mention it to it is a bad term.

I stopped believing in free software ideals when a large part of community, like Mozilla, became pro censorship. And further, others remained silent on the issue.

Sorry, but the english language is the problem here, i.e. using the word "free", when you actually mean "freedom".
Also open source does not necessary mean the actual movment of liberating software as you pointed out correctly.
So let's called it either "freedom software" or "libre software".

i appreciate the message but i don't think you should stress so much about the linguistics of it lol. privacy fuckery is privacy fuckery, open source or not. (side note: telegram is fucking awesome not because of any false misconception of privacy but because of the massive potential for piracy, it even rhymes!)

You can take the Firefox codebase, name it something else, modify it and redistribute it to your heart's content. Isn't that what free software is? I really don't understand how FF gets dragged into this. Surely it's not about restrictions in it's license.. You could build spyware in GPL'ed free software just as much as less Free open source ones.

Nobody cares about Free Software because the branding is literally too jank for it to be technically usable as the term for the concept.

If you care about Free Software, get the FSF to officially change the branding to something that is decipherable.

The term is literally unusable without a 10 minute explanation, and the default meaning of those two words is closed source share ware, which is far less Free Software than 98% of open-source software.

Get smart guis.

RS says it's not free as in free beer, but how is someone suppose to sell their free software if someone else is 'free" to copy it and redistribute it gratis?

AFAIK the way RS defines software freedom implies free as in beer.

There's no difference. Like all grassroots movements, the FSF has been infiltrated for years. The takeover is done already.
"Free Software Foundation announces new executive director, Zoë Kooyman (...) Kooyman, 38, joined the FSF as program manager in early 2019. She has a diverse background as a highly experienced international project manager and event producer with demonstrated skills in successfully organizing and executing technology and social justice initiatives."

Open (for Trojan use) Source softwares.. or how neutral community workflow is inevitably absorbed into EVIL oriented end projects..

I see what is happening with Audacity, Waterfox, Ubuntu, what occured to winamp , the trend with windows OS.. they end up in a death cycle.
Glad more peoples finally understand and acknoledge the agenda behind the 'Open' movement and misleading of language.

[ [ LIBERATED-Software ] ] should be a better name to use.

I can see how little peoples care and like Mark Passio said : that's why we're seeing the distopian mess of today (that will inevitably get worst over time if we dont correct the course and put the ethical priorities in order).
The chinese dictatorship gov is switching to 'open-source' OS this week.. It should tell you something on how bad closed source has become and how flawed open-source can be.

hi Luke. I'm sure you get a lot of comments like this, but I wanted to ask because I don't know what to do. I've been wanting to work on my privacy a little, but I've been using browers like chrome for some time and I imagine that they have a bunch of my data saved. How do I wipe it? is it even realistic to think that or is it already too late?

The FSF should adjust their name to Freedom Software Foundation, and slap some eagles and AR-15s on their logo (with maybe a monster truck in the middle-background).
Slap some propaganda on that shit, because now it's just a boring group of people doing something with some "GPL license" or other, IDK.

I totally agree calling it "free software" can be confusing... I suppose that's why some people say "Libre Software"... But "open source" is just going halfway toward the ideal kind of software, and propietary software is the worst type of software....

The MIT licensing is out of control. Companies expect our community to maintain free code while ChatGPT and CoPilot are being trained to replace us. Open Source is not bad when used in the right case. But it isn't the end all be all.

The thing is, you are defending what Free Software should be, but not taking into account what it really is, or what the tangible achievements of Free Software have been after so many years. Protecting your privacy is much less important than giving more and more people tools for empowerment.

I want to to trust Telegram more than some other solutions because it isn't a big American company (the "enemy of my enemy is my friend" logic) but the point still stands that the Telegram server software is neither Open Source nor is it Free Software. Use it if you must, but just be aware that what you say is probably just as spied on, only by the KGB and not the NSA.

But with free software one of the requierments to be classified as "free software" by the fsf is that you have to allow users to distribute their own copies which if you are selling a paid product its gonna be extremely hard to earn money by that as one could just buy it and share it with 7 billion people. Thats the only part of "free software" I disgree with. The other 3 are very well thought in my opinion.

I wouldn't say so, many of the best software out there are open source and not free, because people who usually make free software take this as their main feature when it has to be an addition, that's why gnuboot, and most free distros are rubbish, so like Luke Smith, free software belongs to guys with neckbeards who think they are better than they are

I've always thought the counterfactual is interesting. Can software be "free" while also closed source? Not entirely, as you cannot freely modify the software if it's closed source, but a developer could otherwise entirely respect the user's freedom while keeping the source closed. Of course, you'd have no way of verifying that fact as you can't look at the source code, but it is possible. I do think open source is a good in of itself, as when I heard Firefox removed their privacy statement I immediately switched to LibreWolf, so I guess what I'm saying is open source is a great way to maintain the freedom of software.
