Singapore has an open skies policy. Malaysia limits what carriers can operate in the country. Obviously, Singapore will be the preferred route for plane transfers so more carriers operate out of Singapore. And simply by economies of scale, SIA benefits and pulls ahead. It's not rocket science.

I feel one of the biggest issues with MAS is that it doesn’t seem to know what kind of airline it wants to be. It’s not priced competitively enough to be considered as a budget carrier, but it also doesn’t offer the premium experience that would justify the higher fares. Which ironically are in the same league with American airline companies, that holds a poor image, inferior, inconsistent quality of service and seemingly doesn't care about their customers where the main focus is to churn a profit. This middle-of-the-road strategy leaves customers confused and disappointed. In contrast, SIA has always positioned itself clearly as a premium airline—and delivers on that promise. Which means they are not clear about their brand identity.

Anyone who’s flown both airlines, and you’ll often hear: SIA delivers a more polished, consistent experience. From check-in to in-flight meals and cabin crew professionalism, SIA sets the bar high which is why it is always one of the best airlines in the world (if not the best). MAS however, often delivers a hit-or-miss experience. Sometimes the staff are excellent, but other times the service feels rushed or indifferent. That inconsistency hurts its brand trust.

Also to speak about bad omen. There’s no getting around the fact that the twin tragedies of MH370 and MH17 dealt a serious blow to MAS’s global image. While these incidents were not the airline’s fault per se, they did create a lasting association with bad luck and mismanagement in the minds of many travellers. People will tend to value their life will not fly with MAS. In contrast, SIA has maintained a spotless safety record and an image of calm, competent professionalism.

SIA has consistently been a leader in innovation—be it offering new cabin classes, upgrading in-flight entertainment, or rolling out top-tier lounges. MAS, on the other hand, often feels like it’s playing a catch-up game. Its fleet updates and service improvements tend to lag behind, making the airline feel outdated even when flying newer planes.

While SIA has a clear long-term vision and invests heavily in training, branding, and customer experience, MAS has struggled with leadership changes, financial instability, and directionless restructuring plans. The result? A brand that feels stuck, unsure of how to move forward or compete globally.

In essence with the above comparisons, there really is no competition as both airlines companies are in a whole different league. If SIA is like a football club, it is definitely in the Premier League while MAS probably falls in the First or Second Division. If MAS wants to compete against SIA, they need more than just new marketing campaigns. MAS needs a bold strategy, consistent service, and a clear identity to make travellers want to choose to fly with them. Until then, MAS will continue to fly in the shadow of SIA.

Singapore is an international hub. Yes, Singapore Airlines is a company above many others.
But comparing Singapore Airlines with MAS is not right. DO it with Qatar Airways, or Emirates would be more appropriate, since both countries (Qatar and UAE) are also hubs.
Aircraft manufacturers like Airbus are building planes that will fly for more than 20 hours. What will happen to these famous hubs when it's no longer necessary to stop for refueling? Plus the transit time, +/- two hours.
I can already hear those who say: "Never. I prefer to land after 6 to 10 hours of flight to stretch my legs... and continue for another 6 to 10 hours. Which will make your trip even longer... more than 24 hours between departure and arrival.
Let's wait and see...
