This is one of the few games where I prefer the SNES version of the music to the arcade.
I love that if you beat the SNES game on the highest difficulty, it does not end on a cliffhanger.
That game is super difficult, but the true ending is worth it.

The poster is nice, but it would have been better to have other Art of Fighting merchandise for this year. AoF has been ignored on the merchandise front way too long.

Turn AoF into a Beat'em Up. That's basically all those early snk fighters are anyway. But you are probably right, its days are long behind it.

I found out about the series because I played Ryo in KOF. I bought the ps2 Art Of fighting Anthology(later on I bought the limited run version for ps4). My favorite is AOF2. Even though the 3rd game is everyone's least favorite. The game play feels good and aged better than the other 2 games.
I want a reboot as a beat em up or as an action RPG. I think it will happen in about 10 years since Oda wants to revive old ips.

I don't think every game needs to be an esports game. I really would like to see then revamp the gaiden system in a sequel. But with the cost of development so high, I can understand not seeing a new Ryuko...

First time I played the original game was on the SNES, much like the majority of the Neo-Geo fighters that weren’t World Heroes and Samurai Shodown. Eventually, decades later I finally got myself an AES system and it was the third series I completed on it, after WH and SS of course.

Been playing the original game all this month though I wasn’t aware of the series anniversary at the time. Always liked the emphasis on special move micromanagement that came with the Spirit Gauge (Pretty sure that’s an unpopular opinion.).

As for that dare regarding the 2nd game, I’ve already done it. Multiple times in fact. I consider 1 crediting AOF2’s arcade mode my greatest accomplishment in fighting games; more dear to me than playing and beating any pro player.

As for the series’ future, if there was a tease for a new game and SNK pulled the same stunt they did with MOTW, I’d be content with the series remaining a trilogy. I have no interest in playing an AOF fighting game without a Spirit Gauge and I sure as hell have no desire for an AOF game that completely changes genre. Given the amount of things I don’t care for in current fighters, this series can keep World Heroes and Darkstalkers company in the graveyard.

The "Art of Fighting" series was truly ahead of it's Time, it may not be that Famous like Street Fighter, KOF and even Fatal Fury, but it truly Defined the Genre that gave the Idea of Super/Ultra Moves in Fighting Games,

AOF is the sole Reason for KOF's Existence, if Ryo Sakazaki hadn't Guest Appearing in "Fatal Fury: Special," all of History probably wouldn't have been written.

I remember playing the game for both the Genesis and SNES. Great storyline, serious action, ahead of its time with the bars, music, stages, moves, and character development. Struggling to initiate super death blows. In fact, I got the cartridge for the Genesis.

I remember seeing it in a magazine as a kid and I was amazed how the characters sprites was compared to sf2 on the SNES. Then my friends and I saw it in the arcades and those huge sprites amazed us. I remember playing it back then but I didn't like it because it was way to hard LoL. Not gonna lie the only way got to play this game at home was through emulation in my teens. And I still didn't like the franchise and it's character compared to games like FF, samSho and the last blade. And don't get me started on the anime think that was the nailed in the coffin for me.

The memory of the AOF franchise I remember the most was at a bowling alley where the SNK arcade machine had Art of Fighting 2 and I didn't know anything about AOF until after Fatal Fury
I could never beat the game cause I hardly knew anything about it but I still enjoyed it.

To me there's another problem with AOF's revival that wasn't mentioned. It has basic stories. For the time it worked well because it was the early 90s and the games actually were inspired by old school action/martial arts movies.

But when we look at all other fgs, 95% of the genre has elaborate plots (compared to AOF) reaching to mystical or sci fi elements, "anime" elements, etc. Even though most fgs didnt start that way, now they have that face. (Even KOF in 94)

So AOF can't blend in around modern fgs including in that aspect. It's too down to earth and that might look boring to an outsider who is used to stories of other fgs.

@carlosaugusto9821
@carlosaugusto9821 - 27.09.2022 05:20

AOF was very revolutionary in many aspects even though the gameplay didn't age well. And coming especially at that time right after FF1, it helped to define SNK's vocation to act in the fg scene as an innovator. And that was essential for the evolution of the fg genre (which imo wouldn't have gone too far on the sole lead of Capcom).

Still AOF was more like a product of its time. Its legacy is centered in being a big depository of ideas even though with rough edges. (As long as one understands that this is common in these kind of early experimental projects). Besides, since the mid 90s the fg scene was promoting combos so AOF had no chance to keep up anyways. Also since the mid 00s fgs have been taking less risks with innovations, so it's like AOF lost the purpose in this era of safer fg sequels.

Imo a good idea of homage to the early SNK legacy would have been adding a 2nd meter mode to KOF 15 (like 97). Since the game was planned to have "all 4 SNK heroes" and release in the early 2020s, a period where FF, AOF and SS will all complete 30 years. It was the perfect timing.

I don't mean a mode exactly like the old Extra mode but an evolved form. Anyways the main point is having energy charge.

I played this game as a child too in the 90s in the arcades. I liked the zoom out and in cameras. The storytelling between matches was very unique and no other fighting game had it except Fatal Fury. It added an interesting aspect. It was ahead of its time. The gameplay didn’t age well as it’s too stiff. The franchise gave birth to Yuri which influenced Sakura from Capcom and it gave birth to my favorite character out of SNK which is King.
A special note on the AoF 3. It is very unique and different. The animation is still amazing till this day. The fighting system is creative. No other character returned just Ryo and Robert. It presented a brand new cast. This game is very special because it was very influential to games like Street Fighter 3 and Garou Mark of the Wolves. Both games had very different and beautiful animations than their last games in the franchise. It presented a brand new cast with only 1 or 2 returning characters. The coincidences are just too much. Art Of Fighting 3 is a very important title.

Concidering Art of Fighting beeing Story focus, your idea of making an adventure game in the likes of Yakuza is actualy pretty smart.

PS : If the AoF characters have to be in a fighting game, they HAVE to make appearence in "Garou mark of the wolf" and "Fatal Fury", It HAS to be. Like Ryo as Mr. Karate II and so forth...

Nice to give Art of Fighting its flowers. Super moves, Desperation Comeback moves, meter are ALL mechanics standard in just about EVERY fighter from Streetfighter to even 3D fighters like Tekken & Mortal Kombat. As for my fondest memory. I used to wait for the badass arcade demo to finish playing before putting my quarter because THAT & the 1st stage with Todo had the baddest music I ever heard in Arcades.
