Blindfold Pickup Challenge - Can You Really Hear a Pickup Brand?

The comment about the strap hanging in front of his ear was more truth than joke when your ears are tuned keenly enough to hear the subtle differences Rob can hear.

At least this proves that you can buy a cheaper brand that sounds like Seymor Duncans or EMGs etc!

This was impressive. Well done. Has Andertons made a video comparing SSS, HSS and HH pickups? Especially for new guitar players? It’s something I’m debating for my first Strat.

Different guitars, with different distance between bridge and pickup, will sound differently.

One of the best things to watch is Rob slowly turning back towards his left everytime they make him turn away to not bump into the other guitars.

Those East Coast guitars from Andertons are really good. I bought a 335 for only £200 and was blown away by how expensive it felt. I do wish Andertons put some effort into making upgrade kits for them. That would be nice.

Chappers plays like a teen discovering metal for the first time, please just let Pete do the demos.

Next time you test EMGs, try a set of 85/58s bridge/neck. They'll still have some compression, but will be warmer. The Fishmans pickups will vary significantly. The more classic versions will be warmer. From what little I've played them, the others tend to be brighter, which Rob picked up on immediately. Considering the EMG 81 is a bright pickup and the Fluence is brighter still, that gives some indication

Two strips of painters tap can be a reference point for Chappers on which way to face. He should be able to feel it with shoes on.

I have no idea how anyone can hear any difference in the pickups at all. I can maybe hear a slight difference in brightness or compression but that's it.

I love the Rob and Lee videos so much, it’s the perfect balance. You guys go together like Tacos and an ice cold Modelo or for you guys maybe Beans and Toast. You completely compliment each other and create the most amazing videos when you’re together. Lee is like the kid whose parents are gone for vacation and Rob is the mischievous friend visiting who wants to play with everything that you’re not supposed to touch.
You need both of those personalities to make it work, Rob has a very American personality and Lee is very English. As an American I feel like we are very optimistic, we speak freely and openly and have a playful nature where English people tend to be more modest, keep more to themselves and are very cautious not to boast and have a strong sense of propriety.
I have been watching you guys for several years, my Dad is a big fan too. With Rob moving to Malta, his presence has been missed. Rob alone isn’t the same thing either, you need the both of you at Andertons studio playing with expensive gear that we all wish we had.

Could it be possible that the pick ups of the Ibanez are the other way round? Neck pickup Air Norton and Tone Zone bridge?

IMO Fluence active pickups are slightly more articulate than Classic EMG actives, sure they don't have quite the bottom end grunt as a set of 81/89s but then again not every genre of music requires 80s metal tones. Good show Rob and I am in agreement with the assessment of Ibanez and DiMarzio pickups they are like PB&J they just go together. The funny thing is that in any other guitar they just don't have the same character though; then again that could just be me.

He knows it's a Chapman because of that (for me) hateful pickup selector location.

If he is listening why does he also need to play? You guys have done how many blind test? You STILL have no clue how to do one without screwing it up. Wow.

According to Glenn Fricker- pickups don't make a difference in the sound.

He did great, but spent a little too much time trying to figure out what kind of guitar it was, which is a clue as to which pickups are in it.

EMG changed their preamps within the last few years so I give Rob credit on that one. They may sound different than they used to.
