Great post! I would also really like to know how the Okinawans prepare their famous sweet potatoes.

This guy tries so hard to avoid saying that these people eat meat, fats and dairy. He downplays it at every turn. Makes me wonder who is funding this guy...

Thank you!

The fact that Mormons don't often live the plant based lifestyle I think has a lot to do with it. Why report confounders when you're trying to push veganism? They don't normally mention the Okinawans eat lots of pork and they live far enough away that most people don't know any better. I believe the reason why Buettner gets it wrong is not because of a deliberate attempt to deceive, but more likely its another example of what happens when we look at the world through the current medical dietary dogma. After all, if you believe that meat and animal fats are bad for you, then by default you wouldn’t list them as contributors to longevity. Which is a shame because people might continue to be misinformed. What should we eat to live a long, healthy life? Gina Baker, a writer, farmer, and researcher, who has lived in Costa Rica for over 20 years, went to the Nicoya Peninsula to learn about the traditional diets of centenarians. Her visits and conversations with the centenarians revealed that their traditional diet featured fried pork, pork brains, and lots and lots of lard. Does this surprise you? It definitely runs contrary to what was written up about the Nicoya people in “The Blue Zones.” In that book, their diet was characterized as primarily vegetarian. On today's podcast, Gina does some serious myth-busting about what has kept the centenarians so well, for so long. She also shares secrets that she learned along the way about the key to the longevity, vitality, and strength of the centenarians of the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica. To me it's channels like this who are just trying to promote veganisim

The recipe given has 28 oz of (canned) tomatoes and the accompanying photo clearly shows a tomato-based soup, which doesn’t even resemble the soup they are showing in the video having maybe one or two hints of fresh tomato in a one bowl serving. The version in the video looks MUCH better.

Just ordered his book! Obsessed with this soup! My Dad had an unhealthy lifestyle and when my first son was born, in 1983, my Dad suffered a massive heart attack and stroke. He survived and quit smoking, drinking beer, ditched his dessert and bad habits for beans and brown rice, and greens which he ate every day every meal and walked. If it rained, he walked in his apartment. He still had a sweet tooth and indulged once in awhile, but he changed his life around and lived a healthier life till almost 90. He extended his life 35 plus years. So it can be done. My Dad proved it. Blessings everyone!

Of course this isn't vegan. Of course, they add some cheese or pork skin for flavor and protein.

"Plant-based" is a better descriptor than how its champions use it. Based, not exclusive.

Why was the finished soup light yellow when they had tomatoes on the table?
Did they put tomatoes in the cooking pot?

This guy is a big fraud. Beans don’t do shit for your health, they only destroy your digestion and make you fart all day long, only for the nutrients in it to be bounded by the antinutrients it also contains, making it actually much less nutrient rich than suggested. Eat some liver and you actually get the supposed benefits of these magic beans, without the lectins and nutrient-binding antinutrients. Also, notice how this guy is trying to downplay ANY animal food mentioned. Cheese - “only a condiment”. Pig ears - “they use very little”… As if Sardinians don’t consume a ton of animal products. It’s a joke. This causes harm to people who are looking for longevity and all he does is trying to make them eat less animal products. EAT YOUR GOD DAMN MEAT AND ORGANS.
