How did the performance go? Don't leave us in suspense!!!
ОтветитьPrevious comments it appears certain peopleare not commenting on the video but simply having a little slagging match. RE: the video - TOO MUCH REVERB! Ensemble=impressive. Balance not consistent. Piano could be slightly louder. Fig. 13 in the Schott edition (25 bars from the end) I felt a slight lack of excitement due to certain rhythms not being as sharp & crisp as written. Occasional notes on trumpet a little too much vibrato. I hope my comments are constructive
ОтветитьIt's him. Wynton has a very distinct sound.
Ответитьlol. I've noticed that
Ответитьwow. are you a trumpet player? or even a musician at all? Do you know anything about this work? Yes, the use of vibrato in this piece is always a topic of discussion, but to say it is out of control? Really? And he does not jazz this piece up at all.
ОтветитьWynton has a fantastic orchestral sound. In fact, he is my favorite because of his orchestral and solo works. not his jazz.
ОтветитьI played this in a solo and ensemble contest in high school. Brings back memories. I was instructed to play it without vibrato (German interpretation?)...but I love Winton's vibrato on it, and he does a superb job. Gorgeous. I wish I had used vibrato too. What a killer piano part!
ОтветитьThis is a nice sound from Wynton. He is in good shape. Who is the piano player?
Ответить@LadyMiles08 can you explain to me how legit is a racist term? its just fuckin slang. and race only matters to people who make it matter. fuck. People who cry racism at every chance they can are just as bad as people who try and pretend racism doesn't exist.
Ответить@boggis26 I know this is from a long time ago, but I think that Maurice Andre or Hakan Hardenberger have a slightly better tone than Balsom. For Andre, I mean his later years. They did instruct her afterall :)
Ответитьwell that depends on the aural concept of who ever was judging it
ОтветитьCan you post the other movements?
ОтветитьGREAT MUSICIAN ... MR. Marsalis ! I can not stop listen his baroque album with Kathleen Battle...IT IS SO PERFECT !
Ответить"Breit" ist "broad". I like Wynton, his tryptique amongst other things are good.. I like his Hindemith tempo. I used his tempo...but I don't like the vibrato. The markings of Hindemith tell you that...and nothing in Hindemith;s repertoire would even lead you to play anything with vibrato..even the oboe solo in Mathis Der Maler
ОтветитьI love Wynton with all my heart, and his performance on this piece is absolutely amazing. It's relatively hard to find, but try to find this piece performed by Gil Johnson from the 50s. He was the principal trumpet of the Philly Philharmonic for 30 years, and later taught at UM until his death where I studied under him (as did Mr. Marsalis from time to time). Mr. Johnson's recording of this piece brought me to tears repeatedly and is definitely worth a listen.
ОтветитьWhat a wild style of playing! Loads of respect to him!
Ответить@HaightNLife Where did you find Gil Johnson performing this?
Ответить@unttrmptplyr I listened to it at the University of Miami's Music Library many years ago. It took some searching, but it can be found on amazon by searching for "Hindemith Sonatas for Brass and Piano by Glenn Gould" on Bing or Google. It's the first result.
ОтветитьHindemith would have been honored. Elliott Oppenheim, TrillliumBrass
Ответитьso i saw him play this live. it was disgustingly loud. I know this is an aggresive piece but he played it too loud, plus his monett makes him even louder. Wynton is a great trumpeter, but certainly not my favorite. I have to say though on this recording it sounds beautiful. Live though....No....sorry wynton
Ответить@TheAngeltoDemon i agree
ОтветитьI LOVE LOUD,I LOVED LOUD ROCK,HINDEMITH IS LOUD BECAUSE HE ROCKS,OLD "CHAMBERPOT" MOZART LOVERS ALSO USUALLY HATE JAZZ,ROCK,CAUSE IT'S "LOUD,AND COMPLICATED",silly rabbits
ОтветитьHindemith would probably hate this recording. The speed alone of this movement is so off that it really makes me lose a ton of respect for Marsalis and his classical playing (not that I gave him much to begin with) All I know is that the more mature I get as a player the less I can stand to listen to his classical recordings. You can't do whatever you feel like to a piece when someone like Hindemith wrote it. He had very clear intentions with his music and Wynton ignores a lot of them.
ОтветитьI love how these douchebags are criticizing WYNTON MARSALIS. If you don't have a shit ton of respect for this man, GTFO of the music world.
ОтветитьI believe he played it wonderfully
ОтветитьOk enlighten us. I'm a young trumpet player, only about 5 years under my belt. I'm willing to admit that Wynton isn't God. He's very good, but not perfect. I'm not going to worship him just because his name is Wynton Marsalis, but if someone is going to criticize him, I'd really like to know more. Please tell us the intentions of Hindemith as he wrote the piece and the ways in which Wynton ignored them. Also please explain what about the piece made Hindemith's intentions "very clear."
ОтветитьYou're clearly very ignorant. Every solo piece of music has a limit for interpretation, yes. I will admit Marsalis PUSHES that limit. To say that he is outside that boundary though is showing ignorance. Also in regards to the tempo. It says in the composer's notes of this piece (in case you're too dumb to know what the word composer means, that means Paul Hindemith himself) It says play this piece any way the sounds good. I'd say that Marsalis did a pretty good fucking job of that.
ОтветитьMonette is very controversial I'll give you that. This piece isn't his best playing for sure. What most people do not know is that Marsalis was on hiatus from classical playing for 6 months before he the record label called him up and said, "We need you to record this now." Under contract he had to. Also just to make us feel worse, his Bb was worn out and Dave was making him a new one during this time. So he learned this in a short period of time on his C trumpet.
ОтветитьYes. That information is accurate. I don't know where it was recorded, but I'm making a strong assumption it was just in a nice recording booth somewhere in New York City.
Ответить@Maltrumpet @trumpetdemon @LadyMiles08 Can I just come in with a comment after reading heated debates? I am a trumpet player, but I do not follow the famous musicians. I don't even know who Wynton Marsalis is to be honest. So I can say I've listened to this with completely unbiased ears.
Ответить@Maltrumpet @trumpetdemon @LadyMiles08 I believe this apparently major talk of vibrato is not affecting the piece to as large of a degree as it seems some are putting it to. I love the way this piece was played, and listening again, imagining no vibrato, it still would be amazing. Slight criticism can be good, but it's been overinflated in this instance
ОтветитьSimplemente increíble :)
ОтветитьI could listen to this all day.
Ответитьtoo fast
ОтветитьWish i could just borrow Wynton for my grade 8 on monday, got to play this piece! Distinction would be no trouble if i played like that!!
ОтветитьClassically very few modern trumpet players can touch Marsalis' tone. He uses a touch more vibrato here than necessary, but that is personal preference. That being said, he is not trumpet god. His jazz playing, although technically superb lacks any sort of interesting phrasing or noticeable style. As a side note, I have met Wynton several times, and every time he was pompous and rude. He went as far as to tell me that the Beatles weren't "real musicians" because they had to hire a trumpet player
Ответитьyou're*
ОтветитьI'm not too fond of this rendition. He sounds brittle and coreless to me. The sound is large but there's nothing at the centre of it. I'd blame the recording engineer but this is not the first time this has occurred. Despite it's teutonic qualities this needs to be played with more poise and elegance.
ОтветитьI was skeptical before I clicked on this, and I think my reservations were well founded. Hindemith is just too far from Marsalis' musical temperament. (Though of course he plays baroque and classical superbly, even incomparably.)
Ответитьthis is actually something vincent dimartino once told me. some of these pieces were written in a time where trumpets could not play "loud" and it sound good. play the piece as if you were playing it the day the composer finished it. maybe even get a trumpet/cornet with a mouthpiece made from such a time if you could.
ОтветитьAh, except this is NOT a classical piece. It's a 20th century piece which means its *open* to interpretation so he can play with how much vibrato he sees fit. I think he played it marvelously and I too play with the same amount of vibrato when playing this piece, maybe even a little more.
ОтветитьThis is no music and nad for my ears!!!!
ОтветитьHe is so perfect it makes me sick
ОтветитьI performed this in this in the high school days. Very difficult for the piano player. Got my medal at least. Wish I had heard this version before the attempt. Wynton is #1 or #2 in my books. God bless him and music.
ОтветитьExcellent performance as always from Wynton! Different interpretations are what makes music interesting. I played this in 1990 for my senior recital. It is a real test of endurance!
ОтветитьNo third movement? Pussy.
Ответитьhot cross buns is better
ОтветитьI have to play this for an audition. It’s ezy if u don’t play loud. Otherwise your fucked
ОтветитьThe hardest part about playing this song is finding an accompanist!
