I believe the farm worked so well because God's system was used. There's a reason for all the plants and animals.

At 55 years old, with a deep desire to contribute to this way of life and live it, is there a roadmap, realizing there’s only so much physical strength I’ll be able to sustain…I would like to die trying what you’re doing in some small way.

The bottom line is that all is not lost, and with effort and inspiration we can regenerate the whole planet's ecosystems and provide a more sustainable society. You must be blind to not realise that this is the attitude humans should take. Let's hope the younger generations are inspired by this brilliant film/documentary. Great job! You deserve a Nobel in environmentalism.

I am poor. When The Biggest Little Farm movie came out, I paid full price dragging my friends every single week just to see that movie. 10 weeks in a row I went and watch that movie and I love it. I went out and bought the DVD.
I taught myself organic gardening and the whole thing with the worms and the compost and integrated pest management and I must tell you I freaking love that movie!!! If the photograph of Todd looking straight at the camera with those amazing blue eyes was produced on a t-shirt (100% cotton), I would probably buy five!! I love the movie I love the way the movie was put together I loved the nature shots and there was just enough drama and adventure to throw everybody in the theater thank you so much to TODD for being the catalyst *RIP

Wild deer, elk and other animals natural to the environment could provide the ruminant function on a "vegan" farm that isn't raising traditional farm animals for slaughter. Or the traditional farm animals could live as guests on a vegan farm, still performing the function of eating grass and making manure, just with a different end of life. Anyone have this experience?

Interesting film. Don't be fooled.. farming is not as romantic as this film makes it out to be.
They had major financial backing to do this. Probably dropped two hundred thousand in the first 10 minutes of this film.
The saddest part of this is that it was edited in a way that makes the viewer think these two were doing so much on their own.
Make another film highlighting all the workers who made this possible.

This is wonderful - what beautiful people and what an amazing invitation to live regeneratively and have a new relationship again with nature. The talk about this being an issue of national security reminded me of Paul Stamets' argument that saving old growth forests is a matter of national security, given their role in hosting mycelial networks and species of fungus with the potential to transform our food, medicine and even things like packaging, engineering, ecosystem cleanup.... I hope you'll have Paul on one day.

In your talk with Zach Bush he commented that farmers "till for the aesthetics". I'd say it's more like they till because, having turned it into dirt, it has to be unnaturally aerated in order to absorb water and make space for roots to grow (of short rooted annuals). And it could all stop with cover cropping and diverse plant systems that include deep rooted perennials.

I don't have a green-thumb (quite the opposite actually). I want to learn so bad though. I'm going to buy myself a house with land and I want to build a miniature of that. Fantastic video! I missed it when it first came around, it’s so good to see it now in 2023. I suppose the biggest bone of contention here is the whole question of animals death in farming. I remember an interview with Wendell Berry the famous, writer, poet, and teacher from Kentucky. Obviously, a very enlightened guy who also has been a farmer for many years. At the time I was seeing the video I was pretty virulently vegan, and he made comments about the necessity of killing animals, if you’re a farmer. And I didn’t like it. However, after watching this video, I understand more. It’s easy for me as a rural suburban dude to opine judgment upon farmers for the death of cows, pests, and rodents. However, I see now my lack of vision and understanding that the Earth is constantly about death and life. It’s the only way. One just has to make a decision on what sort of death one understands/supports. And that it’s just the way things are in nature.

Ammonium Nitrate? Doesn’t nitrogen come from green or “fresh” plants in a composing situation? Isn’t that enough for vital soil, as a source? Why is the ammonium crystal (coming from animal poop and urine I imagine) necessary?

All animals die. And all are eaten by macrobes or microbes. Evolution is a beautiful and ugly thing, if you insist on thinking in such childish ways about reality. The food chain that delivered us all, is not going away because some simple-minded, ignorant children throw tantrums, that we exist because we ate animals. It's all beautiful, and sad, and happy and magical. And what other species' diets would such children wish to change to their detriment.

The earth does not care about us. The next mass extinction is coming, and this earth will remain indifferent to it. The reason to "save the planet" is for self-interest. I love the life on this planet and our species and intelligent, rational, wisdom including conservation. We need not think like simpletons, and apologize for our existence. But I would agree that many people have little reverence for the sanctity of life and the conservation of this brief moment of time we have on earth.

I'm a vegan and think it's naive for vegans to expect total veganism for everyone. I don't like the idea of any animal being sold for slaughter, but I am totally on board with John and Molly and give them an enormous amount of credit for having a regenerative farm. At least their animals are cared for and healthy. As much as vegans would love to see the world become vegan, let's have a reality check...it's not going to happen. So, instead of questioning Rich's 'lack of' concern or pointing fingers at John and Molly, maybe, collectively, 'we' should be praising and raising them up for all of the hard work and dedication they have put into making a farm that is sustainable in every way. We need more people like them, we need to encourage better farming practices. Vegans, please put your energy into getting factory farming to stop and support farmers like these two incredible people! The world needs them. (I know this podcast was 3 years ago, but it's still important and still a hot topic). Thanks Rich, for another superb podcast.

I watched this film the minute it came out online and I remember thinking, "Yay!! They really GOT IT!!" I'm an environmental educator and majored in communications, hoping to reach people with film and TV. I did produce some for PBS but not with the emotional connection that makes Biggest Little Farm so very powerful. I am so grateful for John and Molly sticking with it and seeing this through. Awesome podcast! Loved the interactions between the 3 of you and the insights about regeneration. I have been retired for 6 months and am now 68. For the last 5 and a 1/2 years I have been turning my weed choked 3/4 acre backyard into a farm in San Diego County. I whole heartedly concur with your approach and felt a connection with the 3 of you. I hope you will take what I am about to say in the spirit of love in which it is given. Your awe of Nature and all of its unfathomable complexity will, I hope, turn into a realization that there must be a Creator as there is no way anything like the big bang and evolution could come up with this amazing gift we have been given no matter how many billion years it was given. (I don't believe in that part obviously) The interdependence of ecological systems that would have to come together quickly all at the same time would be impossible. The systems of individual organisms having to evolve at the same time creates the same issue. Something to think about. (By the way, when the Climate Change crowd vilifies carbon, please remember that they are talking exclusively about CO2 which is very necessary and something we could actually use a lot more of.) Thank you for all you are doing to improve global health!

For me, (a pescatarian) I do not object to people eating meat. My objection is how the animals are treated while they lived. As long as their animals are treated well while they live, then I think those who consume those animals are going to have more health benefits from them being raised on this farm.
