A warning, seriously? A warning usually needs the cpacity to follow up with consequences. Who are you again? How will you punish anyone, who did not heed your warning? What is this video about, click baiting angry customers?

Honestly I did like Veilguard... at first. The gameplay was good, and the environment was truly beautiful, but that's where it ends. The story, while interesting, is so overdone. It abandoned what mad Dragon Age what it is, and the dialogue was cringe and abandoned the established lore. (There were already LGBT characters that were done well in DA. Why did they see the need for that certain scene with Taash?)

Ah, well. $60 I'll never get back.

"Written by incompetent activists with severe mommy issues who uttelry lack any maturity" Sure, but calling others incompetent activists and claiming they have severe mommy issues, screams maturity 😂 Just because you wore a suit to say it, doesn't mean that what you are saying is mature. Insulting people calmly is not solving anything, it's just less annoying than screaming insults which most people do nowadays. This is not an invitation to discourse, it's blatant slander. You want to speak for the gaming community and advocate for a better gaming journalism? Then do it, this was not it

Videogames were created for children. Adults should not be playing videogames. Nor should children be playing videogames because of inappropriate content. Videogames are bad for everyone. Adults should be working and contributing to society. Go outside and do something productive or get a real hobby like fishing for fish 👍

I haven't played the game, and I want to try it for myself as a HUGE fan of the Dragon Age series, but all the negativity I see is aimed at fully optional character choices that would have been added to make a marginalized group feel seen and like they can insert themselves into the game (the biggest one I keep hearing about is an OPTIONAL feature to have a transgender identity and top surgery scars, neither of which exclude anyone but allow trans people to make a more accurate self-insert character). Also, if you think political messages or undertones in games is new, you've either only played FPS multiplayer games or never paid attention to dialogue in most any game 😬

A slight bit of nuance to add to your warning there. In particular about the authenticity of reviews and the use of fake reviews becoming more prevalent as of late.

First of all, I do agree that they should not be using fake reviews or any other tools available to them to circumvent the authentic opinions of the people who have actually played the game and do or do not like it. Note I mention both sides of the coin there in terms of favour towards or against the game, becuase it can go both ways.

However, there is a missing point in your warning that needs to be confronted, becuase it is part of the true reason why we are at this stage in the whole debate right now as it were.

Let's face the facts. Fact is, there are a lot of people out there who also leave purposely negative or even positive reviews specifically only to sabotage those devs and publishers for a myriad of reasons of which can be both legitimate and illegitimate. Obviously the legitimate reviews are not the problem outright. If the review is legitimate, then the positive or negative manner behind it is not of issue. The problem is the illegitimate reviews that are left by people who did not play the game, or did not even give it a fair chance to begin with, or did play the game and did give it a fair chance but ultimately didn't like some 'thing' that doesn't actually matter at all. To be fair, this can be hard to tell which is the case in some reviews, because the myriad experiences we all are subjected to via these games can be quite subjective to each player. But the objective truth is that just because you or I do not like something about some game, doesn't mean it is necessarily bad. Perhaps it is bad, but it is ultimately only bad to those who agree on the situation. Example?

Well, I admit this is a bit of a difficult thing to parse out into more black and white examples for the lesser intellects out there to understand properly, but I will give it my best shot.

So let's look at the game Smash Brothers. It is a game that I think can be used here rather accurately due to it having to deal with a lot of the same situation, just under a slightly different guise. Sure, Nintendo may not be getting super political about their games characters, etc. That is probably for the best. But they do still do some of the same things that other game devs, publishers, and the media have been doing as of late through that game as well. Not only that, but it also suffers from some of the same effects that ultimately seem to be on repeat mode for many games.

Starting off, we'll cover the popularity front. Like it or not smash players, not everyone likes smash. They prefer other games. And I think we can all agree for the most part at least, that this is perfectly fine. Everyone has the right to like or dislike games of their choosing, right? Hopefully for good reason, but they still retain that right. But having said that, there was a time that some of you might remember quite well, where smash brothers was considering more of a niche game due to the limited amount of popularity it had at the time, right? Despite that, there were the people who preferred games like mortal kombat, or street fighter, or some other game like tekken, and they despised games like smash bros. (Not all of them of course, but there is only so much a person can write without becoming a hot air bag.)

Fast forward to today, and most of those people who would have negged on Smash, now are mostly silent about it, because the amount of people who do like smash, are a high enough number that most of the negative attitude towards it is ignored, or outright dismissed. But it wasn't like that at the start, and it didn't change overnight. It took multiple releases of the game in new updated versions of it for newer consoles over the decades now for it to get to this point. Even when Melee was the newest version and gaining popularity, it was still a small community by comparison to today, and compared against the haters back then as well.

To make matters worse, there is a little known effect in the gaming community that causes a lot of problems for game developers. There is no name for this that is known via the community, so I am just going to make up a term for it. I call this effect the 'new game always bad, thus older game awesome' effect. For short, it will be reduced to the N-gabtoga effect.

What is this effect? Well, quite simply, there are generally usually always just enough people who liked an older version of the game enough about some things, that when the new game comes out and changes those things in any way at all; it produces backlash against the new release. It sometimes doesn't even have to have anything to do with those old things that were liked. It could be new things added that are not liked anyways. You can find this happening with, I would wager, almost every single game with consequetive releases, even when they are not tied together via any lore. What ends up happening is the new game is slammed with a bunch of negative reviews from those people, even when others like that version of the game more than the prior versions. Regardless of opinion of whether those games are justified in being liked or hated. That is what happens. (Don't hate me for saying this, I'm just the observer passing along the truth experienced, like it or not.)

So, which games from the smash series got this treatment? Well, technically all of them, but Brawl and Smash 4 Wii U (S4WU for short) got the worst of it by far. Why?

Because of the N-gabtoga effect. Brawl was not a bad game by any means of the term in an accurate way. There were things that were not preferable to certain players, for sure, but it was not a bad game. But it was still treated as if it were. Why?

Because brawl took away some things that people liked a lot about Melee, and even changed some mechanics about how the game play operated to also thwart the kinds of players that look for bugs and exploits in the game to be 'better' than their opponents. One such situation is the slip/trip mechanic that was put into the game to keep people from wavedashing. The melee lovers hated this with a passion. You think you despise certain game journalists more than they hated that mechanic? I suggest you reconsider that opinion. They hated it so much, some of the most dedicated smash players basically refused to play anything other than Melee until Brawl was replaced... by S4WU. Which they also did not like all that much. It was considered better than Brawl in some aspects, but ultimately was still hated by those melee players by and large. Heck, S4WU was going to be the final entry to the games series at one point, before the Switch got one 'last*' version. (We'll see how true that is when the Switch 2 comes out...)

Others make claims about how it just feels wrong in the way the characters move. Others will cite input lag issues. These are not unjustified opinions, but they ultimately were not so heinous as to make the game unplayable, or even unenjoyable.

I mean, case in point, Brawl when modded became one of the Melee players more favourite versions of the game, aside from their precious Melee of course. I mean heck, they even call said mod "Project Melee"

So, going back to the point of your video. Why does this matter in regards to it. Well, in specific in regards to Veilguard, we can probably point to the N-gabtoga effect in some regard as well. Sure, it was worked on by people the community really doesn't like right now. That is not being argued. But what is being argued, is that this result would likely have still occured anyways. And with some proof.

Dragon Age 2. After Origins was released, we eventually got word of the 2nd Dragon age game coming out. And people were hyped, rightfully so, because Origins was such a great game even with its issues. (Which it had a lot of).

But then it was released, and boy oh boy was it ever hated. Some might even say it was the worst release possible, at the time. Now fast fowards to today with Veilguard, and we have the same thing happening again. DA2, is now being called one of the better versions, though Origins still takes the cake with some.

(Comment got too long, rest of comment is in reply this one.)

Catastrophic failure? According to what metric? Dragon Age: The Veilguard recently hit a benchmark of 70,414 active players and is currently the best-selling game on Steam, surpassing even Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. If you want to argue that the story and gameplay didn't live up to your expectations, that's fine, but that's a matter of personal opinion, and in this case it certainly isn't translating into subpar sales numbers.

Look, i could see Dragon Age circling the drain with Inquisition and it's obviously evil moustache twirling bad guy. Say what you want about how crap DA2's level variety was, they got a lot of story in that game. Truth is BioWare never survived getting bought up by EA. It shows as early as Mass Effect 2 (which is the game responsible for the trilogies collapse, ultimately). It took a mortal wound and it's been a long slow death.

They're now a studio run by an absolute amateur hour of a staff, which might come out fine in the end if EA let them find their own legs, but no, they want their money out of their beautiful corpse they paid so much money for and they don't care who they've got to hire to get it.

Basically any game reviewer or journalist who gets early access to games should be eyed with a healthy dose of skepticism. So much of the industry uses the games journalism and media as basically a free marketing arm.

There is a reason no one should follow "game journalists", only individual game reviewers, particularly if you find a few whose taste in games are similar to your own.

And any "journalist" who lies in their reviews, your opinion is worthless as it's untrustworthy and without trust a "journalist" is completely worthless and objectively a failure of journalism as a whole.
