I am a direct descendant of William the Conqueror on my father's side, so it was interesting to see this movie!

Props are due to Harold Godwinson. Remember that he won the Battle of Stamford Bridge in York against Harald Hardrada, King of Norway who also laid claim to England's throne, marched himself and his men halfway across England to get to Hastings all with a few days and came very close to winning the battle.The armies were very close in number and Harold had the advantage of supply and terrain. What won it for William is that he was a superior tactician to Harold, The Normans could not break through the Saxon sheild wall, so William used a tactic called the feigned retreat to lure the Saxon army to break formation and chase the fleeing Normans which they as having knights on horseback had the advantage, the horsemen turned around and slaughtered the Saxons.who only had infantry, then Harold got the famous stray arrow in the eye and the rest as they say is history. He deserves credit and our respect though, if his army had been more disciplined England's history would have been very different.

I liked this Backstory .... My only problem is the William that invaded England in 1066 was shall we say a "More Substantial" Man! His Nicknames were "William the Fat" and "William the Pot Belly" ....

Haven't watched it yet. Wondering if The Doomsday Book is part of the story...

On an interesting side note: Ivo Taillefer was a Norman minstrel, juggler, and knight who earned immortality at the Battle of Hastings when he asked William for the honor of making the first strike against the Anglo-Saxon English. William agreed and Ivo rode out alone. History says Ivo put on quite a show, juggling his lance and sword while singing the ‘Song of Roland’. An enraged English warrior stepped forward and challenged Ivo to single combat. Ivo killed the challenger and took his head as a trophy. Needing more heads for his next juggling feat, Ivo charged the enemy by himself but Ivo’s charge did not work out well for him as he was pulled from the saddle and hacked to bits.
