In the 70’s in the city it was alley cats and packs of dogs running around, but no rat problem. The alley cats would take of that. I remember walking past vacant homes and 100 cat eyes would be watching you.

Cats are such lovable little savage. Our little bundle of cuddles is a killing machine. No more rodent problem. Poor guy LOVES hunting and catching prey but he’s been so effective there’s nothing left to hunt.

We only allow him outside in our fenced yard that he can’t get out of. There’s a busy street nearby and coyotes at a nearby park that I’ve seen right behind our backyard. So his range is pretty limited. I’m sure he’d love to roam all night though.

A few days ago, a little boy named Michael Millet was killed by pits the owner claimed were friendly.
The dogs owner let them run loose in the neighborhood.

Most cats are wary of rats and their teeth..Cats generally catch mice but do not attack rats

This past fall (2024) my neighbor 3 doors down had 3 mice in their home. My next door neighbor had 5 mice and they have declawed cats.
Both of my 5yo Torties have their claws and I have not seen a single mouse or even a carcass in the 4 years since I adopted them.

About 14 years ago my family moved to an area with a huge rat population. We had six cats with us. About 4 months later the rat population had been decimated and the neighbours who were not so fond of our cats in the beginning now actually love and feed the cats 😅

I had a pretty bad rat problem in my basement apartment years ago. The landlord did all he could to seal off any entry points into the house but the rats kept finding their way inside. After a frustrating couple of months he allowed me to bring three of my aunt's cats in to live with me in the basement. "Magically" the rat problem disappeared after about two weeks.
