I take your advice very seriously, but that electrical explanation was... inaccurate. 12V across your body through DRY skin won't create any significant current. Try holding the poles of a car battery one hand each - same thing, that battery can output north of 100A, yet you won't feel a thing, because your body will not draw any significant current, since its' resistance is too large.

True that! Learning welding and eventually getting Certification on 7018 stick steered my career into many diciplines and made adopting MIG a truely simple step. Rock crushing/Road building, Mining, Carpentry, Structural welding, High Tech plumbing, Aerospace assembly, Wafer fab and Hard Drive Disk fabrication equipment. Etc etc etc
It opened up an amazing life.

My dad taught me how to weld on a mig welder first, then he taught me stick. I loved practicing my beading and learning how to keep a steady hand and pace. It really helped my focus. I need to pick this back up again.

Teaching myself welding has been the second-most satisfying thing I've ever done, after becoming a father. Being able to fabricate things (just for my own needs and pleasure) have given me a giant confidence boost, and made me more self-reliant. I built a double gate for my driveway, and it turned out great, of I do say so myself. It's great to be able to build things you can be proud of.

I wish I had done this 30 years ago.

I can't imagine welding in a white shirt or jacket! My wife already thinks I'm crazy, but white clothing around all the dust and grime would be the proof of it. I wish I'd had the opportunity to learn welding when I was young, but I'm finding it satisfying to be learning now in my 70's.

Been an Electrician for 28 years, held a master contractors lic. for about 14 of those. Along the way (whether home owner related or work related) have acquired many other skills to include masonry, drywall, concrete, plumbing, equipment operation, tile, fencing. The one thing I have never done is weld. Looks like I've found the motivation to learn.

Thanks for this great video.

I strongly disagree with the idea that one must learn Stick first. stick is way too old and dirty and difficult to deal with these days and more often than not the results are no very good at all and will almost always be rejected. MIG is just convenience and speed. TIG on the other hand is the way to go and learn. It will give you (when properly mastered) results that that simply cannot be equaled with any other means of welding. TIG gives you precision, finesse and nice esthetics and obviously the best consistency and weld strength. However the downsides for MIG and TIG is the need to always carry pressurized gas containers and having to refill them and constantly watch and check/verify and the added expense that Stick welding does not have. Which is why a big number of people tent to actually stay well away from MIG or TIG simply because is not convenient ! to have, use and maintain. With Stick, you just buy the electrodes and "Off you Go".

I agree 100%, however starting with oxyacetylene will give a better understanding of fusion and puddle control, as well as simulated practice with TIG.

It's hard to beat a vintage Lincoln AC225 for a first welder - rock steady, bulletproof and effective for popular common rods like 6011, 6013, 7014 and 7018 (AC version better) plus other cast iron and stainless steel specialty rods. The down side is its weight and you do need a 220V/50A circuit and outlet to make use its full capability.

I'm 57 and did my first ever bit of stick welding just recently. It took forever and I made a bunch of rookie errors, but by the end of it I'd fixed the indicator bracket on the back of my wife's ute. Never too late to start, and if you keep safety in mind, it's not too hard. As I say to my kids, you don't need to be afraid of power tools, but you do need to respect their ability to mess you up if you don't respect them.
