iPhone Filmmaking Advice by TANGERINE Filmmaker Sean Baker

Some awesome advice! People who want to start filmmaking but only have an iPhone or any other smart phone need to watch this first. :-)

I have yet to see Tangerine, but I saw the trailer multiple times on NFS.com, I loved it!

He is right, get a stabilizer and good sound, ive filmed a few videos with my iPhone and it needs these.

What was the budget of the movie?

His reluctance to give advice here shows he's a thoughtful artist who knows the pros and cons about shooting with a phone.

Even with the 6+ there's a jell-o effect when moving quickly as the optical image stabilisation couldn't possibly compensate for the movement your hand is doing in a way that feels completely and utterly natural. A stabiliser it probably always advisable.

Agreed on the sound aspect, but there are more phones than the only one mentioned in the interview, like Samsung's S6/7, which are better in many ways. Why advertise one particular phone?
How about good lighting? No point using any device if the lighting is bad.

its so crazy that he said the audience can accept anything visually but the sound has to be crisp when me and quit a few of my fellow artist in the "cloud rap" scene of the early 2010s felt exactly the opposite. film HD sharp music videos like lil b the based god, main attakionz, a$ap rocky but the music was lo fi nasty and filtered lol. at least thats how i saw it and was tryna do it

No stabilizer was used ,just my own hand as the movie warranted it , but will for next project

I worked with Sean a lot early in my career, and I can say that he is one of the most serious and passionate filmmakers I've ever met.

If you have an iPhone witch the majority of people already own them spend a good chunk of your buget out external audio recording equipment because your not spending on the camera equipment

Past tense of sync is synced, not sunc (sunk?). I didn't know either, had to look it up, so no shame to you, Sean.

I've always loved his films. Those oscars were such a wonderful surprise. I noticed QT escorting him off and backstage pointing to the oscar for best director; i imagined him saying, "I hope i get one of those someday." QT's only won for writing, not directing.

When I saw him win the Oscars, I thought, "He looks familiar." I saw him for the first time on Film Courage nine years ago. It was an amazing interview.

Watching an Oscar winner talk dyi techniques in his regular ass house only 9 years ago is so inspiring
