PetSolutions: How To Properly Set Up An Aquarium

We only covered the necessities when doing this set up video. An air pump is optional and not a requirement when setting up an aquarium, unless an accessory in the aquarium needs an air pump to run (i.e. some type of air driven aquarium toy). If oxygenation is your concern, the filter used in this setup oxygenates the water quite well and has been used without an air pump for many years on both freshwater and marine aquarium setups.

@slash74537 - If you are seeing a rapid decrease of water accompanied by puddles, chances are you have a leak and need to either buy a new tank or else get some aquarium-safe silicone to patch the seams. If it's a slow decrease in water, then you are just experiencing evaporation. You should top off your tank with de-chlorinated water every 2 weeks or so. If you are doing regular water changes, you will combat evaporation when you do your substrate cleaning and refilling of your tank. Good luck!

@Paws24live - The Emperor 280 Power Filter is quiet & very durable. It does a fantastic job with biological, mechanical and chemical filtration. Our Live Deliveries Manager has used them on several of his aquariums in the past and really likes them.

@michshell531 - While it is not absolutely required to have a heater on a goldfish aquarium, it is a good idea to use one if possible. In a goldfish aquarium, a heater serves the purpose of keeping water temperature consistent, rather than heating it up to a warm temperature. Set the heater at about 76 degrees, and you will likely see your goldfish do much better over the long term than they would have without a heater, especially if you're keeping ornamental goldfish such as Orandas.

i have a aquestion. im getting a 55 gallon tank. can u sughest a top and a filter from your site that is not to pricy?

@hajello913 If you like the hang on the back type aquarium, I prefer the Emperor 400 because of the amount of bio load it is capable of supporting. If you like the canister type filter, the Fluval 305 is a good way to go. The Emperor 400 is significantly less expensive than the canister. Everyone has their own favorites based on their experiences with filters. My opinion is based on 25 years of experience, and using almost every filter commonly found in the market in that time.

You can wait one day if you feel comfortable with it, but the two day period was recommended to make sure that all of your equipment is going to be functioning properly and your heater has the chance to warm the water to the proper temperature. Thanks for your question.

I had to put feeders in my tank and its talikng me like a month so far . When I got my water tested they said I need more bacteria the next week I had to much bacteria

Yes, you want to leave the filter on at all times.

thats rediclious , goldfish are very dirty fish , they need more filtration if anything.
