Patterns of bureaucratic growth in heterarchical organizations:
Investigating Holacracy at Springest

What are characteristics of new emerging forms of organizing, such as Holacracy? How can we study these type of phenomena? How can trace data be employed in order to understand how organizations develop?

At the Routines.Research.Community meeting at Warwick Business School (https://www.researchgate.net/project/RoutinesResearchCommunity), Saimir Bala and Bastian Wurm presented a snapshot of our research at the idea bazaar. Together with Waldemar Kremser , Erik Strauss, Reinald Minaar, and Jan Mendling, we take a joint effort to investigate Holacracy (a form of self-managing organizations).
Organizations that use Holacracy as a management methodology consist of Roles (approximately 10 per employee), which are organized in several Circles. These circles are self-managed teams and together form the overall organization. Roles and Circles are revised in Governance Meetings, which are decentralized, formal decision making processes.

For our research, we extracted trace data from a Dutch company, Springest. We created a network visualization of how Roles and Circles at Sprigest develop over the last 5 years. This video will serve as a screening device for high level patterns, but is for demonstrative use at this stage, only.
