Other than the patents they might have bought Motorola so that it becomes the nexus. The word nexus drops while Motorola becomes Googles personal phone manufacturer

Because the only sold hardware and most software. However google was able to preserve over 1000 patents for Motorola. I really hope they keep the dimple that I love so much about the Moto X

Motorola never made Google any money. By ditching Motorola, Google can return to be a neutral, honest broker of operating systems to the world and make money doing so.

I think Google used Motorola to show the world that you can have cost effective devices that are high end. They wanted to change the game so that way their nexus devices are viewed differently. They changed the mobile world

Google sold Motorola, because it was not a very known brand. I think they didn't have any profit from Motorola, so they sold it to lenovo.

Google sold Motorola to Lenovo because Google wanted to control Samsung as it is the most popular android company . Google had to sell away Lenovo because many other Android companies thought that Motorola was Google's favourite as they owned google.

One of my best guesses is to do with Motorola's siting of their manufacturing ops to the US. The costs, mainly labour, are thus too high, and therefore the company is less profitable. Same reason for the current exodus of companies from this country

Either that or the price-points of the Moto G and X aren't working out profit-wise.

So aside from the hardware and research divisions and patents staying with Google, I think that the real reason Google sold Motorola to Lenovo has something to do with their relationship with Samsung. Sure Google wanted to hang on to Motorola's patents to defend themselves against Apple and their notorious lawsuits, but the whole relationship between Samsung and Google is all very suspicious and ever changing. The two companies working together in the start is what really got Android off the ground to begin with, and ever since Samsung gained Android market share dominance and has started demanding more from Google, the relationship hasn't really been the same (hence Asus and LG now manufacturing the latest Nexus devices).

The bottom line is Google doesn't like Samsung taking their pure Android software and changing the heck out of it so you don't even recognize it anymore. Their whole magazine UI that most people seemed to love definitely did not please Google in the least bit. So Google went to Samsung and said "Hey, look. We don't like what you're doing to Android. What do we have to do to get you to stop?" Samsung, being the dominant company that they are, doesn't like the fact that Google owned Motorola, so Motorola essentially would get first crack at all the new Android software versions coming out, and Samsung would have to wait, further dissatisfying their customers.

My theory is that the two companies came to an agreement that if Google sells Motorola to a company (Lenovo) who is trying to gain traction in North American markets, Samsung will axe their Magazine-style UI and go back to the more traditional Android look. Part of this agreement could also involve Samsung ditching their whole Tizen software, as that would be detrimental to Google.

Answer to the Q&A: They kept a lot of Motorola patents, which they now already used in a big patent deal with Samsung. This is all part of a rather long term strategy, not the short term "buy a company and suck money out of it" strategy to protect google for future patent lawsuits against competitors.
Since I´m not a native speaker this week I hope you will bear with my english articulation skills, which is only fair cause you ruled us out last time when German native speakers were not picked unfair for winners.

google sold motorola so that they can focus on developing android OS without making other companies think that they are bias and to prevent samsung going over about creating their own UI...... and maybe that could be they reason why they will also stop developing nexus...

Hi Android Authority,

I'm hoping you could help me out. I am deliberating on purchase of a knew phone, after having dropped my Sony xperia active, that has now lost all connection to the memory card and  has a decreased battery life. I want something fairly durable, as I dropped it a couple of times outside, an quite a few times inside. I was thinking that maybe I would get a bigger one, so as to not have to buy a tablet. Or do you recommend buying a smaller and more durable phone and a tablet for overall increased lifespan? I don't have too much of a limit on price if it can mach acordingly in lifespan, at least 2 years, preferebly 3-4. I Mostly watch videos as the app feature or on a tablet write documents, and therefore I value god battery life. Hoping that you can help me solve trough the maze, thank you.

I believe Google sold Motorola to Lenovo because if Google produced higher end Android Smartphones via Motorola and sold it for a higher price tag [unlike the Moto X or the Moto G], they won't simply sell well. And Google maybe was not interested in spending a lot of money in building lower end handsets and selling them.

Whereas Lenovo is not quite popular in the Smartphones market, and a brand like Motorola would help them boost their sales.
