My company does a take home assignment for new hires and it's definitely not work we are trying to steal. I've reviewed the same test probably a hundred times at this point and it is invaluable for assessing skill level. Some people are just really good at inflating their abilities and achievements in an interview, but the test doesn't lie.

This happens all the time. I personally had one of the major casinos in Las Vegas ask for free work disguised as an interview test. Question: Tell us how you would replace forms authentication with OKTA authentication on a project. Then tell us how you would get "management buy in" for the proposed change. The sample code provided looked like it was legacy code they are using for their customer service desk for rewards cards.

it's not exactly the same, but these remind me off all the spyware code challenges I get assigned to do as a "pre interview step." because these recruiters don't want to call their 4 set interview process a 4 step interview process. a code challenge, talk with the recruiter, and then 2 'rounds' with the final client is NOT a 2 round interview. but the code challenges are also just the most random stuff. like, why do I need to know the deepest depths of string? and the fact that they think you have to know everything about the programming language by heart, because programmers never have to check with other people or documents. that's ~cheating~

The problem is that anyone who completes that task and gets hired will secure himself with a job that will require after hours work on a regular basis.

Anthony, I have been following your excellent content for some time and it's great. I have a divergent view point on the near real life assignment thing, I myself have used this as a tool as a recruiter manager in pre chat gpt times to narrow down skilled candidates because we had a deluge of resumes and very few had actual skills. I never had to use their code ever for any real time projects, the risk is just too great. In any case, we had folks who had already done similar coding on our rolls anyways and could evaluate the candidates based on their output. Candidates were required to discuss their approach in the face to face interview later and we would have a deeper discussion. In this age of chat gpt and amazon q I would not.use this interview anymore as anyone with some basic understanding can perform.on such assignments with ease only to fail miserably in real commercial assignments

Her language and some of her preconceptions are way out of line, but I can't judge whether she's fully in the wrong or no, unless I see what the problem statement actually is. It could be that the candidate is up their own ass too, tbh. Coding challenges, if done right, are the best way to assess skill. And if the requirements don't seem like straight out job requirements here, then that means that the candidate overreacted, probably out of frustration.

You know what's a giveaway here? The "audacious or delusional" thing makes no sense. If you're saying the candidate who just graduated college and has no experience couldn't possibly write good code, then you are lying. You're interviewing them for a job. That's an admission that you think they might be good enough to hire. Even worse if you reached out to them first.

It's Indian corporate culture, they're delusional and pretentious and don't care about potential and future production. Only past and present, that's why they're behind. Most companies outsources the grunt work to them for that reason.

I've seen this, a few years ago the most egregious I experienced was an interviewer that had me for more than 3 hours 'interviewed' by 2 members of staff 'asking' how to manage their stack and solve and architect their infra. No job offer after such 'interest' in my skills and problem solving and no drinks or breaks either. I was dehydrated in more than the one way. I traveled some distance and at my own expense to get there ( of course ). Not an isolated incident.

Here CEOs wants someone to work 7 days days and 70hr a week
Cause why would someone wanna see his/her partner
Spending time with their significant others is unproductive

And do all this with way way less than minimum wage

They pays salary based on yr 2000 economic year data

As someone who sucks at leet code interviews, I much prefer take-home assignments. But the ones I've come across so far have never been ones that a company would have any real use for -- usually just to-do apps or the like. I'm not saying there aren't people exploiting people out there, and I completely understand the point-of-view for people who don't like them. I'm just speaking for myself as someone who sucks at the whole interview game.

Although, I did get this one takehome where they basically wanted a fully working, production ready app with full automated testing, responsive design, the works, and only gave me a few days to do what was clearly 2 weeks worth of work.

Hi Anthony, from the name and the content, the HR lady is definitely Indian. For a country which is apparently tech focused, we have insanely idiotic hiring policies. Take home assignments are mostly the norm and not an exception, sadly. And most candidates choose to do them. It's just in 2025 that we have seen a slight shift in the attitude

My first job out of college they asked "Do you know C#?" "Yes, but beginner." they said "No worries, as an intern you'll be working with a senior developer to get you ready. You'll be working and getting experience as you go. At the end of the internship if you gain enough skills you very well could be hired." I would decline work assignments for free too unless they were very simple clear examples that took less than 1 hour.

I've come across her profile, and it seems her entire persona revolves around being an ex-(insert top Indian university])graduate and a former consultant at a prestigious firm. There’s a whole subset of people in India who equate success solely with attending elite institutions and then make that their entire identity. The way she speaks and carries herself might seem normal within that echo chamber—a space driven more by optics and brand names than by genuine, meaningful accomplishments. It’s this culture of maintaining a facade of prestige and inflated self-importance that pushed me away from the country. I found it stifling—not just because of people like her, but also because of the large number who validate and perpetuate that mindset.

This trend is quite dumb when you think about it, degrees and courses are supposed to show your understanding before you get a job.
So if you aren’t taking that at face value then you probably shouldn’t limit your talent pool to only people with degrees.
