The chicken litter method requires constant, almost daily, scooping of their droppings. Otherwise, it can become a large mass of poop.
Netting around trees: I used chain, loosely wrapped around the tree to allow the tree to grow. Support ropes and netting are tied directly to the chain.

Dident you have trouble moving your chicken mobile when you took it from the hoop coupe back out to pasture?

Have you widen the wheel base and put in some independent suspension springs off a car or anything to give it better stability for big moves over not ideal ground as it so tall and tipping is/was a concern?

One thing ive noticed not only on here but i chat to a heap of homesteaders on line that all tend to be in the states , no one dose fox or snake fencing which is a old staple here in OZ on your perimeters of your free range chook yards and your coupes with their own chicken runs .
I even use them just on my dog yards as its as good to keep digging dogs in as it is keeping foxes and snakes out .

You can have your heavier gauge chicken wire or even better a paraot proof buddie mesh as the holes are smaller that parrots cant bolt cutter through with their beaks on your sides and you can get roll 7ft wide , to snake proof you put from the ground on your sides corrugated iron with the coorugation going up and down , not running side ways for at least 4 foot all around over your mesh and a foot in to the ground and fox fencing is that you use parrot weld mesh on the ground pinned down 3 to 4 foot either side of your perimeter so asnything that diggs hits the weild mesh and cant tunnel under unless they want yo tunnel 8 feet under and a good foot down or climb up 4 foot of iron with nothing to get a foot hold on or slither up to get in or out .
Saves doing the entirer floor area of your coupe runs if you have a large arear like the carport coupe on here or chook barns ive seen else where.

Not cheap to do a whole yard but if your just wantinf to keep foxes out or dogs in , sheets of concrete reo works to keep larger animals contained.

Not 1 American ive spoke too even knows what im talking about but its a rural must in Aust to keep you chooks safe.

I had 24 chickens for a number of years (also rabbits, pheasants and meat birds) and we were fortunate to not have predictor issues. We dug the grazing area wire about a foot into the ground.
I miss my hens and their eggs…

Comments on the Deep Litter Method, Morgan? I cleaned my elevated coop out for the first time this spring after about 9 months of use

Ответить
@Lazy_Fish_Keeper
@Lazy_Fish_Keeper - 04.07.2023 01:13

Morgan, your ducks and geese can also be conditioned to poop predominantly in one area of the coop.

We built a drawer system, and just slid the "drawer" out and dumped each drawer in the wagon to go to the compost/manure pile.

Because we lived in an area with bitterly cold winters, we opted for the deep litter method in the rest of the coop, and did a deep clean in late spring. Microbes and naturally occurring Bt in the deep litter kept flies under control throughout the summer, and fresh straw (6" on top existing litter) each week through the summer, fall and winter keeps birds clean.

That super deep litter, with fresh added each week, keeps the birds warm all winter.

The litter trays made it aromatically viable.😅

Several years after making one from scratch (pun intended), I am really glad I did. I designed my own because I wanted one that did what I needed it to. I can fully open it up to clean it out. Open just a small amount to check for eggs in the main coop area. There is a removable door on the opposite side to the wall that opens up so I can get into all corners for a deep clean and just rake/sweep the whole thing out(I use a deep litter method) There is a nesting box external so I can get to the nesting boxes without going into the run. It is raised from the ground. It has a big run attached so if I am away I can lock them in to keep them safe. I designed it to have an inlet door fit on the coop so they are extra extra safe at night. It has a tight mesh around to stop predictors. They have an automatic door for the fenced off area in my backyard so they can go through my garden beds. There is a water tank outside the run that has an automatic water dispenser so I can be away for long periods as well as a chicken treadle.
I used predominately heat treated pallets, colour bond roofing that my family had left over, gate from the tip shop and pretty much as much reused material as possible apart from the frame and wire. The roof also runs off straight down to my citrus trees too so the water isn’t wasted

I found a small coop for 75 off of FB market. It isnt perfect, we put a new roof on it, had to install roosts and will be building nesting boxes into one of the walls sticking out due to the smaller floorplan. Because I am not a morning person, I got an auto door off the get go. I won't lie, i wish i had the 3 grand to build my version of a perfect coop but this will work for my small flock for a long time.

Note on the shed kit- I have near the exact same one and it is easier to clean out than any other chicken coop I have ever cleaned because it’s plastic and flatter so it’s easier to sweep and wipe down and all that and the generally have bottoms so it doesn’t seem easy for predators to dig into

Here’s an alternative for your eggmobile if you don’t have an old wagon kicking around. You can use an old sled or a wagon with sled runners on it instead of wheels, making it easier to move in the winter months.
Also it helps to choose the right type of wood to build with, I plan on building my chicken coop out of hemlock beans and planks. It is very strong and also lasts a few years longer than cedar would.

I am sure after I post this I will see 100 other comments just like mine. Redo the math. 24x16x8 =80 ft x 8 ft tall. So 2- 100ft rolls of 48” in tall mesh will cover the entire coop. You said $1200. But you can get it covered with 40ft extra for under $400.

So basically everything’s doing to try to get in to eat my chickens, their eggs and food? I’m in a hidden area in the city but it is beside a huge field of land, feels like the country and the animals I’ve seen here are Racoons, hawks crows rats mice cats possums skunks coyotes (big pack in the field that how when emergency vehicles echo this way, the highway is below so when them, there’s whatever else is found in Ontario.

I've got a 6x8 chicken coop & an 8x20 run & I wish I had more space for more run, but then it would be illegal for being too close to the power lines... =/
But my fenced garden's nearby & I just load them up in a box & let them free range the garden a few days a year while I clean out their coop & run (deep litter method).
ETA: covered run with shared coop roof for shade in the deep south as well as easy predator protection.
The coop door is always open in mine since the run is protected everywhere by hardware cloth. Haven't had a problem in 8 years with predators.

On the subject of hardware cloth, pay attention to the kind you buy. Clearly the type that lady was working with when he did the math seemed pretty easy to lay out and make nice. I bought hardware cloth just from my local Tractor Supply and it was MISERABLE to work with. It’s the most difficult material I’ve ever attempted to work with.

Cheap hack for anyone who wants an alternative litter box. I have a tire with straw on the bottom underneath where chickens sit at night. They poo in the tire i shovel in excess once it is full pull it out of the coop easy to pick up into wheel barrow and dispose into your compost.
