Asserting that social media represents democracy is absurd. I live in a country where many people speak three or even five languages: the official languages are German, French, and Luxembourgish. At school, we also learn English, Italian, or Spanish. This provides a 360-degree view of cultural understanding and allows us to follow world news without relying solely on partial comments on German or French topics. It's essential to read the press and listen to conversations in the original language. Many comments are based on translations or AI, but many people are unfamiliar with the language and culture, having never been there; it takes time.

The statements of JD Vance or Trump could just as easily come from any politician in Europe, for example, Salvini, who has neither studied nor speaks any language other than Italian. Believe me, knowledge allows for better reasoning. I see it when one speaks the language of the other; everything changes. In Italy, I speak Italian, and in France, I speak French. That's why the discussions of Vance carry little weight.

12/16/2025- Democratic leaders need to defend their democracies from Russian and AXIS propaganda and their massive disinformation campaigns which are designed to undermine democratic institutions, and manipulate elections in support of AXIS allied politicians and political parties. The AXIS is aiming their "bayonet" of propaganda, disinformation and misinformation at the soft "underbelly" of democracies by using the democratic commitment to free speech and free and open elections to undermine democracy. Democratic leaders in Europe and America must pay attention to their intelligence agencies which have documented increasingly sophisticated efforts to shape public opinion in favor of AXIS geo-political positions regarding the Ukraine war, defense of Taiwan and its democracy, and encouraging capitulation to the autocrats' demands (for example, deny Ukraine's membership to NATO and EU, disarm Ukraine, accept the partition of Ukraine after the illegal Russian invasion, do not demand Russian reparations for war crimes and the destruction of Ukrainian cities, do not demand the return of tens of thousands of children abducted from Ukraine, accept that Taiwan is part of China and stop protecting its democracy, etc.) Western politicians and their media allies who support AXIS allied political parties are the" fifth column" undermining democracy and freedom as the forces of totalitarianism continue to weaken the walls protecting our liberty. Where is the outcry about the stolen elections we have witnessed in Venezuela, Belarus, Georgia, and Russia? Have western democracies learned how to defeat Russian election interference such as we have witnessed in 2024 in elections in both Romania and Moldova? How can we deny the AXIS threat when in 2024 we have witnessed joint military exercises of Belarus and China on the Polish border, we have thousands of North Korean troops engaged in active combat a short distance from NATO's borders, we are seeing Iranian drones and missiles every day destroying infrastructure and killing civilians within Ukraine, we see the deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus in violation of the nuclear non-proliferation agreement that Belarus had signed, we have seen Belarus used as a launching pad in the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, we see China supporting Russian aggression economically, politically and by providing the technology Russia needs to continue its war against Ukraine. To quote the New York Times 2/15/2025 page A7: "Particularly since the start of the war in Ukraine, European intelligence agencies have raised alarms about what they consider to be a systematic effort by Russia at mass disinformation and propaganda, often by using fake social media accounts to sow division and doubt about democratic systems." Western democracies must courageously face the "Play book" of "State Capture" being used by the AXIS and their "fifth column" allies within our democracies. We must remember that "State Capture" which destroys democracy and creates AXIS allied dictatorships is cheaper and more cost effective than invasion and war.

With the Russia-Ukraine war, Russia repeated the strategy of military invasion used in the Transnistria War from March 2 to July 1992 to create a Russian satellite state Transnistria separate from Moldova. In August 2008, the Russo-Georgian War or the Russian Invasion of Georgia resulted in the establishment of two Russian backed separatist regions- South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Russia is now building a massive naval base in Abkhazia so that Russia will never return this land to Georgia. By invading Moldova and Georgia, Russia succeeded in keeping out of the European two countries our of the EU and NATO while leaving open the future option of capturing the rest of these countries by using the” Play Book” for “State Capture”, or by a future military invasion. Russian troops remain to this day in these captured territories, and mass protests in Georgia have failed to stop the gradual dismantling of Georgian democracy and freedom. In 10/ 2024, the Russian backed Georgia Dream party conducted a stolen election and ended its application for EU membership. The Moldova election in 2024 was the victim of massive election interference by Russia and its proxies, but the brave and brilliant Maia Sandu won the presidency so that the country could continue its march toward the EU and democracy.

Another example of Russian election interference and an attempt at "State Capture" happened in a NATO country at the end of 2024. To prevent a stolen election, and to ensure the correctness and legality of the electoral process, The Romanian Supreme Court (12/2024) annulled the first round of the election of a far right, pro Russian, ultra-nationalist candidate after blatant Russian backed election interference, "aggressive hybrid Russian attacks", and election manipulation by Chinese owned TikTok which used algorithms, paid promoters, and coordinated accounts that came alive only weeks before the election. The Romanian intelligence service concluded that the 85,000 cyber-attacks on election websites, and IT systems could only be done with the considerable resources of an "attacking state". We must remember that the "Play Book " of "State Capture" is much cheaper and more cost effective than invasion and war. What would NATO and the EU do if countries in NATO fell victim to the AXIS strategy of “State Capture” and an AXIS(Russia, China, Iran, North Korea) allied dictator destroyed democracy from within, without war, and a NATO country became allied politically and militarily with the AXIS, all without activating NATO’s Article 5?

Timothy Snyder describes Russian imperialism as follows: “Putin’s wars on Ukraine in 2014 and 2022 were Neo-neocolonialism. Russia's leaders applied every argument from the history of imperialism, including Nazi and Soviet neocolonialism, to Ukraine and Ukrainians. The state did not exist; the nation did not exist; international law did not apply; borders were not real; Ukrainians were colonial people yearning for domination whose alien elites were to be destroyed and whose food and other resources were to be plundered. The scale of Russian atrocities after 2022 was comparable to that of the worst colonial wars of the past.” (On Freedom, page 128). Western democracies must stand against Russian and AXIS imperialism in Ukraine and within their own countries.
