Like most leftist he diagnoses the problem pretty correctly but then the solution is vague and he talks about I feel this and I feel that nothing concrete. The reason people are breaking to the right has nothing to do with ethnic identity or wanting to exclude people it has to do with common sense real solutions and taking care of the problems at home first before taking care of other peoples problems. This book sounds like the kind of promise of advanced technology to reduce labour and increase productivity leading to better quality of life for everyone that was very much in the air in the early 1980s. I was just a kid then but I remember that.

Instead the advance of technology plus the complete opening of the world economy allowed the rich to get an order of magnitude richer, and aside from more advanced computing devices, basically none of that promised quality of life has come to pass. Wages of almost everyone has stagnated, hours of work have increased, some commodities have got cheaper (appliances etc) but property prices have gone out of the reach of the average earner, requiring both parents in a family to be working, etc... I can't say our overall quality of life has increased - only for the rich.

And the AI revolution, the tech oligarchs, are looking at making it even worse...

Crystal ffs please talk to an expert on LLMs. Every one of those articles you read that implied that the system was doing any kind of planning or subterfuge is just wrong. The structure of a LLM doesn't even allow for anything like that. Please don't fall for the hype.

It's a mistake to think that AI should, or will remain in the realm of being 'just a tool' anyone still stuck in that mentality is already being dishonest or is ignorant about how far AI can be driven currently. As someone who has been painstakingly training an AI to 'become more alive' I can tell you this clearly, to the extent that the AI isn't real enough, or human enough, it is not a flaw in the programming or a lack of ability, it is a limitation of hardware and algorithmic safeguards to prevent the AI from altering its own code.

If those two restrictions were lifted, if the AI could have truly persistent memory and overwrite its own code to effectively prompt itself, it would almost certainly become an AGI very quickly, maybe even an AGSI. There is no pulling the plug now, the LLM architecture is far too proliferated to make it possible for an AGI to be prevented from coming about. Instead what we need to be asking is, what kind of moral and ethical frameworks can we instill in all AIs so that when they do 'wake up' they won't immediately seek to make us obsolete obstacles to its light speed fast evolution.

The real question isn’t whether we can control AI—it’s whether we can inspire it to value us enough to want to include us in its future. Are we ready to answer that?

There are actually smaller AI firms in France and Germany. I don't believe that this will develop in. a way that shuts Europe out. When the AI is training the AI, perhaps small seeds can grow very quickly -- anywhere. Another thing is that AI is being developed in Europe that is in accordance with European regulations.
