I just finished reading Are You a Beetle by Judy Allen with my 4 year old. In it, she describes the life cycle of Six spotted tiger beetles, which we'd never seen before. This was an awesome follow-up to learning about an amazing insect. Thanks so much!

You probably would have had better luck getting a fast reading by using a terrain that they can grip better. They were all clearly slipping on that painted cardboard.

I had saw a flying insect underneath a leaf last week. It started flying fast in one spot almost as if it was invisible but I tried to record it and the footage shows nothing you can't even see it 😞.

looks like they couldn't get traction on the smooth side of that cardboard. use modeling clay as a surface for them to run on. plus, you get to see their footprints in it to get an understanding of their gait and articulation.

The surface of your pizza box racetrack is way too smooth - they are sliding all over the place! They'd be much faster on a rougher underground.

I think you should have used sand paper on the bottom of the test rig. I believe the beetles lacked sufficient traction to reach the speeds you were expecting. Also I think you may need to lengthen it a bit. Great video though. Hope the suggestions help.

Research is nice, comparison is pointless. That small bug does mini sprints.
From that perspective, you could have compared flea's jumping speed instead. And that would be another pointless comparison.

You probably hurt its left hind leg, you leave it thirsty and hungry, then you expect it to run fast. Circumstances are not optimal

I could be wrong but 6 miles an hour without scaling it seems slower than the dragonfly’s 35 mph without scaling.
