Whoever gets in to govern our country needs to prioritize what's important, and this is a must fund for everyone

Public service jobs are important, we all are impacted by them in some way in our life. Hospital workers, teachers, police, ambulance, fire, armed services etc. (just not politicians😂). They are also hard jobs that require time spent training (often with loan debt attached), time away from family, often unsocial hours - nights, weekends, public holidays etc. demand in these areas is increasing. They deal ever increasingly with negative members of society or negative behaviour.
In order for these services to continue at the level we as the public expect, they require current workers to stay and new people to want enter the jobs and to stay in the jobs (and hopefully some that have left to want to come back). Importing people from overseas while helpful, is not a good long term strategy as it just puts further pressure on the country in regards, housing, transport, education demand etc etc. we need to encourage our young people to want to do these jobs and to remain here in NZ in the public sector (not just moving into the private one).

Clearly Money is an important factor as are conditions.

A solution as I see it to attract people into these hard, often under appreciated jobs. And to keep people there for the long term is.

1. Lower tax rate for public servants - gives an effective pay rise that is targeted to where we need workers.
2. Pension plan (above KiwiSaver and the government pension) for long term service. Eg. For Every 10 years service you get a set amount per week.
3. Government supported low interest rate loans up to a set amount (eg 500k or whatever) for either first or the existing family homes only at say 1%. The loan goes back to the market rate if you leave public service. This allows young people to have a realistic chance to purchase a home.
4. Further support of study costs eg specific allowance for training in public service fields, loan supports. Probably with some bonding attached.

Just 4 ideas.
Unfortunately, Gone or going are the days of the young person willing to devote their life to public service. Just look at how many community or sports clubs struggle to get engagement of volunteers. That was never a problem prior to the 90’s/ maybe early 2000’s. There needs to be an incentive for young people to look at these jobs and think they are worthwhile to go into and they are worthwhile to stay in NZ in the public sector for long term. Otherwise we will continue to see what is happening now. Good people training here, seeing how the job is here compared to elsewhere, and then as soon as they can either leaving the country, moving into the private sector or leaving the jobs all together.

Hopefully some government down the line will look at this and do meaningful interventions. Otherwise we will continue to see the public services we all rely on not meeting our needs. I won’t be holding my breath.

Well there you go, it's because they put this 'te what ora' in charge or whatever that means, why don't they just put maori 'medicine' to replace traditional western practices ?

These main government health sectors need to get their priorities straight. The doctors and nurses need more pay as does the junior doctors, health, education, poverty, housing, work. Tax the wealthy.
