Click bait title. Anyone at the level hired to play with these guys plays stuff along these lines on a regular basis in terms of taste and connectedness along with some technical skill, Kimock, Anastasio, Haynes, Mayer, etc. Honestly a 2rd or 3rd tier moment for a band of this caliber.

He's the best thing to happen to the post-Jerry scene. They finally have a band where the lead guitarist is actually grabbing the wheel and leading the band, instead of standing in Bob's or Phil's shadow like a hired hand working for a paycheck. Mayer didn't need the money. He didn't need the gig. He just fell in love with Grateful Dead music and decided he had to do whatever it took to make this happen. And I love him for it. I feel bad for all the people who can't let go of their emotional baggage long enough to enjoy this absolute gift.

And the fact that a former pop star and pin-up idol replaced Jerry is the ULTIMATE prankster move
