I spent several weeks over there a year ago. The Islands are self-governing, and the U.K bankrolls their defense. It works for both of them. The U.K. can fly sorties in inclement weather with few people to disturb, and Falkland Islanders have the U.K. defend them without cost. Fishery fees make the islands self supporting. Oil has been discovered off the waters of the Falkland Islands.

Local people will tell you they are Falkland Islanders. They value their connection with the U.K., but they told me they do not see themselves as an extension of the U.K. They have nothing in common with anything Argentinian, and many have not forgiven Argentina for invading their islands. If you go there, it will be obvious to you that the Falklands never have been or never will be part of Argentina. Many Chileans work there and feel the same way.

I am a Spanish speaker and have visited Argentina four times. I make a point of avoiding las Malvinas as a topic of conversation.

Let’s just say that the force of arms is what matters. The nation with the most firepower, best tactics, best weapon systems, and doctrine will always trump any claim! War, unfortunately is what has decided more arguments in history than diplomacy. The Argentine people can wish, argue and dance around the justification for their claim but the fact of the matter is that they lost the war. It is highly unlikely that they will recover those islands now or in the future without the firepower. Period.

It's about the potential oil gas fields off shore.. not the people.
No one surely believes UK cares about it's people. Look what they're done over the last few years.
Gaza is the same. Potential untapped off shore and possible fracking on Gaza land.
The attempt to build a proposed mini Suez canal in that area for trading..
More land theft.
Wakey wakey.

If Argentina want to take back the Falkland Islands, no better time than the present.

We have a weak government, even weaker army, navy and air force..

Go on Argentina do it, dare you

Argentina did not surrendered. The islands garrison fall, not Buenos Aires. All our civilians suffered an ethnic cleansing by HMG in 1833. We do not care if the implanted, colonial population wants to be British. We do not want them. We will have our islands, with or without them. WE WILL BE BACK.

See the difference between the British and the Argentinian governments. When we were defeated in France in 1940 our troops came home and were treated well. The Argentinian army when they came home after their defeat in the faulklands they were hidden away from the public. That is the difference between the Argentinians and the British people.

there should be an ultimatum made, Falklands people vote on the matter, and Argentia admits that their claim is false if they loose the vote. then Argentia should be FORCED to admit dfeat as they have ZERO rightful calim to the islands, briatin has......on the demand of my non british european country I demand Argentia......it must be accepted, as one from country have seen argrentian in the padt so it must belong to my country......how utterly idiotic is that

The defeat of Argentina was not a scandal or a shame. There is no shame in defeat. there is no evidence they hid their troops. The entire world is proud of Argentina. The history of Britain is something hidden by their oligarchy. That history consists of extermination of the indigenous people of Australia. It also involves bloody massacres in Africa, the Mid-East, India, Pakistan, heroin smuggling in China. Britain leaves a bloody legacy of racism and slavery. Need I say anymore? Argentina and Latin America have been in the Vanguard of egalitarianism for two centuries. The entire world owes Argentina, moral and political support

Argentine authorities wanted to deport Falkland Islanders to the Argentine mainland, where they could be conveniently 'disappeared' without trace.
Here in the U.K, We do not abandon anyone under the protection of British government, maybe in Argentina such a betrayal of their people is acceptable, but We are more civilised than that.
The Falkland Islanders choose to be a British Protectorate, they are the only ones that get a say in the matter.

The Falklands had no native people living there so the Island have never been colonized. So the issue is a land dispute the next step is to ask the people living there what they want. They have done this. Argentina has never taken their case to the international court as they all ready know the answer. Argentina needs to except the wishes of the people of the Falklands and become decent neighbor.

its strange that some Argentinians, perhaps most, still think that the claim on the islands should carry on, at some time it will result in another attempt to take control.
the way the Argentine population felt ashamed of their defeated soldiers was disgusting and yet many want more of the same.
so long as the inhabitants want to be British then the British are duty bound to protect them.
If the population ever decides to become Argentinian citizens then the British would be duty bound to accept their decision. Its called democracy and we in Britain value it.
