Audiotechnica Atlp120xusb or Pioneer Plx500 is way to go under 500 bucks. Audiotechnica has no vta adjustment and Pioneer plx500 has no interchangeble interconntecs. It depends on your need.

I think the LP60X will create the most attraction here. Made a couple of upgrades to mine in months gone by, replacing the conical stylus with an elliptical and ditching the felt mat for a beautiful blue acrylic. It basically makes an upgraded version of what has probably been the king of starter turntables over the last five years. I'd describe the LP60X as a semi - serious turntable, probably more so with these upgrades, and I think Record-ology would approve of it. Especially the acrylic, his favourite playing surface.
