it doesn't feel right calling this one of the best "games" ever made imo, simply cause the gameplay isn't all that great, it's pretty average gameplay....the story and the characters/acting are amazing though, some of the best story telling and video game characters, if not the best....i actually think fans of the first game that haven't or refuse to play this because of that "thing" that happens are doing themselves a disservice....left such a lasting impact on me, the way it all ends...but anyway lol, one of the best storytelling experiences

Thank you. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

Ellie: kills hundreds of people by cutting their throats, burning them alive and turning them into red smudge with EXPLOSIVE ARROWS

Game: I don't see a problem with this...

Ellie: tortures someone once by smacking them to death with a pipe

Game: Don't you see how horrible and evil Ellie has become?! She's losing it!

All the people who like TLOU2 love to go on and on about how realistic it is and how "real" the characters are. They may even argue that the story was well written, structured and grounded. And yet, when we actually use realism on the story and try to analyse it, several things happen:
1. The Cordyceps fungus, as it functions like a plant, would be gone by Winter. But that's assuming we're being realistic.
2. Any infected that are without proper heating will have their body parts come off due to the intense cold and frostbite as well as all the other natural elements.
3. We don't use vaccines to take care of fungi, that's what antibiotics or topical solutions are for. Even if we were to go with game's logic and assume that the vaccine would work somehow, the chances of creating it, in the world and situation that's presented to us, are extremly small, like below 10% if we're charitable and below 5% if we're realistic.
4. Any self-respecting parent wouldn't let their child get angry at them for saving their life from a bunch of thugs who know nothing about medicine. Ellie is essentialy saying "You ruined my death!" which is just stupid.
5. Any self-respecting parent would take disciplinary action if their child was acting as much of a little brat as Ellie was and would make sure to set the record straight. Joel had so many ways to explain his actions and he chose none of them.
6. The idea that Joel or Tommy would "get soft" after living in Jackson for 5+ years is ridiculous. They're living in a time where, at any moment, they can be set upon by monsters of the human and inhuman variety, so their survival instincts would only get more keen. If you were able to build a community in these arduous times, you'd be more battle-hardened and focused on making sure your community and everyone who lives in it are safe 100% of the time.
7. The idea that Joel or Tommy would be willing to help a random person fight off a zombie horde is ridiculous. Let's not forget that at the beginning of TLOU, Joel demands Tommy not stop on the road to help another family.
8. Everything Abby does throughout the game makes her unlikable and extremely easy to hate. She brutally tortures a man while his brother lay unconscious nearby and his daughter is forced to watch; she has no qualms about murdering children; she doesn't give a shit that a pregnant woman somehow strong-armed her way onto the frontlines of combat; she takes advantage of and sleeps with an emotionally vulnerable and inebriated man; she murders a father-to-be and takes glee in the thought of murdering a pregnant woman; and she has no sense of loyalty, as she mows down her friends of most likely years for a kid she met literal hours ago. But hey, she loves dogs, is a white woman, and respects the pronouns of Discount Mulan, so that means she's a-okay.
9. If this game actually gave a shit about choice, Abby and her group of friends would have died at the hands of Joel, Tommy or Ellie from the moment they met Joel.
10. Abby, as someone who has murdered a lot of Seraphites, has literally no reason to trust Yara or Lev. She wouldn't give a shit about the internal politics of an enemy faction she's been killing in droves.
11. Pregnant women would be the most protected people in this age, and the idea that Mel is somehow able to go behind Owen's back and go on the frontlines is ridiculous. If this were "realistic," Owen would have fought with Mel and Isaac to make sure Mel doesn't step foot outside of the WLF base.
12. Ellie not thinking for even a second about having children to spread her immunity is ridiculous. The damn brat is so hung up on wanting to die for the most ridiculous reasons that she didn't consider for one second to breed. And the idea of Joel not asking anyone in Jackson about this, or telling Ellie that her being alive would mean more to him and everyone in Jackson is an insult to the audience's intelligence.
13. Finally, in a world of limited resources and food, it makes no sense from a realistic standpoint that Abby is as big as she is. As a woman, it is significantly more difficult for her to gain and maintain muscle mass than it would be for a man. It would take her more than a couple years to get that big.

And that's not even the end of it, we could write a book about how the creation of vaccine would have barely any effect on the world and in fact could cause even more deaths... Unless we're just throwing logic out the window.

Every time I see someone say this game's story is well-written, I have to wonder if they're insulting my intelligence. And then I think that these are the exact kind of people Neil Druckman was trying to appeal to: the people who are literally too stupid (I'm sorry but I can't find a word that would fit better) to think about these kinds of things and lack the critical thinking to realize that there is almost nothing (graphics, animations and voice acting are great, but that's about it) redeemable about this game.

Thank you and have a good day.

Ellie is not the villain of Abby's story, that would be Joel. Ellie is the person who has been wronged, Abby wasn't ever wronged, she just felt like she was. It isn't even clear if Abby understands that Ellie is immune and her Dad was only stopped from murdering her due to Joel's actions.

I very much disliked the pacing of this game. The emotional cues were confusing as well. I suppose I simply do not agree with Abby's story being told in such a positive way. It seemed like the whole point was to go "see? she's just a person with motivations like everyone else". My issue with that is that I already knew that, I thought that was implied for every surviving human in the world of TLOU. So if everyone is just doing what they can to survive, why is Abby's story being forced down my throat? Her story is not a small part of the game. Its like half of the runtime. And it seemed to me like that time was mostly spent trying to convey to me that she isn't evil and just a person, which I already know just from the world context. And I KNOW that I am not the only person to pick up on that context.

I'm happy the game exists, it was incredibly unsatisfying for me. But I'm glad somebody enjoyed it. It certainly is nice to look at.

Man… I feel like the intentionally divisive story totally broke what they created in the first game. 😕 Which ruined one of my all-time favorites, so much so that I can’t even replay the first… I think they tried to replace the first’s realism in story-telling with the second’s need for dramatics to be cranked up to 11 at every moment, which destroyed any resemblance to the first game’s character-development.

Respect your opinion. In my opinion this game was not incredible. Far from it. So many plot holes and characters behaving completely separate from their personalities. Writing and character development were almost non-existent. Pacing in this game is ATROCIOUS! So many times my player progression and stats were reset in mid to late game. Making me heard sheep as part of the gameplay was so tedious I couldn't believe I was forced to do something so meaningless. Dumb AI. Simply put, this game doesn't respect the players invested time or any of the characters from the first game. A MASSIVE letdown.

Different and unique does NOT equal good, being brave and bold with the storytelling does NOT equal good, spitting in the face of the fans and trying to be edgy, DOES. NOT. EQUAL. GOOD.
The game is contradictory, illogical, and VERY poorly paced. There are a lot of games out there, but this is the worst game to have ever been made. Having "good visuals", and "stunning performances", doesn't mean it's safe from being classified as being badly made.
I don't blame the team: developers, artists, actors, writers. I blame the one nameless individual that has a God complex, that FIRED a highly skilled and nessesary creative director just to satisfy his ego.

Shitting in the woods and wiping with poison ivy is brave, but it's also extremely dumb.

I have loved video games since the 80's when I played paperboy on my older brothers Commodore 64 and I loved goldeneye on the Nintendo 64 in the 90's, but in all my years of gaming I have never felt such deep and strong emotions from any one game I was left feel shocked, numb, sad and even a little lost and empty all from playing a game wow this is art and while I hated the pacing and there were obviously some negative things but nothing is perfect and months later whenever I watch a video talking about how it made someone else feel the same as I did I feel some of those same emotions again, that is some extremely powerful stuff and all the negative comments are people who totally missed out while we have this deep emotional experience. It makes me feel bad for them because I want everyone to experience what I did.

@ultr0shot440
@ultr0shot440 - 24.12.2022 12:49

Still at the start of the video, but quickly. You said just like the wave of Seattle, one disaster gives rise to another... that's true, but it's because it all just happens to work out that way for no reason whatsoever. The two parts of the story are completely disconnected and that's one of the MANY issues this game has.

After numerous debates I have come to agreement with diehard druckman fanboys and reached middle ground alongside fellow independent thinkers, while ignoring the unbelievably small amount of people who just hate the game for politics... while accepting that Lev really is a walking piece of propaganda. And everyone can agree, while being open minded and accepting the games faults and little greatness, that it is an average game. At most a 8/10 if you like it, at most a 6/10 if you hate it. Personally, I'm I the 7/10 camp.

Pretty graphics aren't gonna fool me when compared to a utterly boring gameplay loop that ultimately equates to a walking simulator. If you love this game, you have NO right to give any gameplay criticism to games such as death stranding, because objectively death stranding asks more from the player than TLOU2 ever does. A story with the worst pacing ever, that breaks the 3 act structure that even Quentin Tarantino follows so religiously in his movies, that pulp fiction had 3 3 act structure movies in one. It spoon feeds and handles its audience with kids gloves and hides it behind gore in order to say "but we are a mature game". However, it truly has some of the best voice acting, and landscapes in any game ever. Along with amazing motion capture. It even though the dialog falls flat and the plotholes/conveniences/contrivances pile up higher than mount Everest, it still has a solid story.

Unfortunately it is weighed down by a director's lack of respect to his fanbase and a studio that doesn't treat its employees right in even a decent manner.

Take away the politics and the poor pacing decisions for cheap shock value, and this game would most likely have been a much better game, but still wouldn't have been deserving of a 10/10 or even a game of the year with the likes of hades beside it with a better story and combat system, and art direction or Ghost of tsushima with better direction, player freedom, art direction and an equally great narrative.

As a side note: pretty graphics should never be praised in my opinion. Graphics age poorly, art style lasts forever. And game engines will always improve, regardless of what game developers do with their games. If anyone deserved an award for how realistic a game looks, no game developer has the right to claim it, but rather the game engine designers. Just look at unreal engine 5. Even the graphics card engineers are more deserving of such a award than a game designer is.

Edit: I agree with alot of what downward Thrust says usually and I really do listen to his input alot. Mostly because we both come from a league of legends addiction. But I laughed out loud when I heard that Abby and Ellie are complex characters 🤣 after analyzing this game for the better part of the covid lockdown in my country, I just can't see it. Both characters just end up seeming bratty and basic. And I couldn't relate with any character except Jesse and Tommy. I never knew what a character would do next and it wasn't because of great character building, but rather a puppetmaster pulling the strings wildly for more shock value. No character made sense. Again, Jesse and Tommy did. Jesse cared and once he found out about the kid he wanted everyone home. Tommy wanted revenge for his brother. Ellie wanted revenge, then didn't, then did, then didn't, then did again, then didn't. Just bratty and swayed again and again because of the director simply needed her to move forward in the story so we could do stuff in the game. Abby went through life blindly and never cared for anyone apart from Oven, just to randomly get soft when the game needed her to. And never once did she even mention how her new found insight effected how she saw Joel or Ellie. It was almost completely forgotten once she found Ellie's location, and she was than forced into being a second rate Joel copy who only stopped because of Lev, throwing her entire (I hesitate to call it this, because it isn't) "character arc" out the window. These characters were bland as can be. Especially when at first Dinah shapes up to be an interesting character, just for you to find out that she randomly went along this Girl she might like while pregnant. Then it completely falls apart when the game gives us a fully pregnant side character later on, who traveled across America in search of a dude she's never met, to get revenge on him for a girl she hates, while endangering her baby and then further doing it once you play as Abby... and people expect us NOT to believe that the director put that in for some sort of feminist political agenda? As she could have just as easily been killed in the same manner they killed her while actually having braincells telling her that she might not be as agile as a non-pregnant woman and she might be slowing down the entire group?

Every character isn't realistic or even has a personality. Even Joel got treated badly by giving away their names or even helping a stranger randomly. And the only excuse people can give to defend that decision is: "He's has ofscreen character development that we should just automatically imagine ourselves to fix the lack of narrative consistency that the director and writers allowed to take place. Besides, he's safe in Jackson, it makes sense that he'd mellow out"... while TLOU1 litterally start with a normal pre-apocalypse Joel telling Tommy NOT to help strangers...

Second edit: c'mon... you used to play league of legends 🤣 this gameplay is nothing. It's exactly TLOU1 and every 3rd person adventure game ever, but just with AAA polish and a prone function. If you've played any assassin's creed game pre origins, this game is easy. Let alone if you've played splinter cell or metal gear solid.

Third edit: I hear alot of people mentioning the brutality of the game. That's kinda ignorant if you ask me and my friends. Just because the camera zooms in to show the gore, doesn't mean this is a next level gore fest. If people have played doom, or even COD MW and haven't realized that gore is BRUTAL that's the player's fault. Even in the godfather 1 and 2 you can see the gore and destruction guns bring. Even though marvel hides the blood for their films, people must realize that even those films have the same level of damage. Just take a moment to comprehend the damage tony took with the snap. Far more than Ellie and Abby did. Take a moment to truly comprehend the damage and gore in even a movies like the 2000's spiderman or even x-men movies like wolverine. What about anime such as dragonball z or demon slayer. TLOU2 just spoon feeds its audience. If you can't realize that by yourself, you need to reevaluate how deeply you get invested into a movie... because me and my friends could understand this concept from the age of 5 when watching the lion King... just truly understanding the death mufasa had, that alone is BRUTAL.

I wasn't going to leave a comment but to say that the writers here doesn't have favorites...i think u need to replay this whit ur own perspective instead of believing that the writers are just right when they are constantly telling u what to think, that's why people is so divided, people don't like the manipulation that this game has. Joel wasn't a villain for saving ellie imo,the cure was just a maybe and it wasn't going to save humanity anyway, just a bunch of selfish thugs, and he makes that decision for the love she had for ellie,so want us to see him as a villain because abby love her father is just manipulative, more if u consider that joel saves abby's life a few moments before the revenge moment, she could be dead if he doesn't saves her a few moments ago,but no conflict there,a cold blooded revenge it's what he deserves, because as the writers wants u to believe during the whole game is that abby was right and she is a good person, it was justified, joel was wrong,he's bad,and to be even more manipulative they ruined ellie and make her a soulless killing machine trying to make players believe that the new strong woman protagonist is the best. U can't frustrate people for the shake of a bad plot and political agendas and believe that it won't piss them off. The main writers could take a way different approach whit abby having some conflicting relationships whit the main characters that people love ,but they need that subvert expectations moment, and whit that they make abby the villain for most players .that's what happens when the writers think that they are way smarter than their audience, everyone will love the game and the fabulous hulk,i mean abby...right? Well maybe they weren't as smart as they think, unless this controversy was planned to make the people talks about it,but having half of the fans of the first game trashing this one doesn't really sounds as a smart move. Is this game awful? Not really, but the frustration comes when u think abby's story could work, joel could die soon at the beginning because of abby's revenge and have a similar plot, but they way everything happens is just lack of talent of the writers or political influences that ruin everything because they don't even understand that people can have many different opinions....😤...this AAA industry is killing me 😅
