49 might be old for baseball, but it's hardly old for life. If you can perform at a high level, might as well keep playing. Satchel Paige played into his 50s. As for ERA, it can be misleading. Way better stats out there these days for gauging pitching performance.

Knuckleballers should be on the comeback, this is the longevity some teams could really use.

But in 1986 you could also buy a house in California for 60k.

The amazing thing is how long he lasted if he could pitch at 49. You are doing something right if you can go that long.
