With the advent of the internet, most of us today can do a preliminary eval without to much trouble and bye on the fly and for higher ticket items from a few hundred to thousands of dollars, there are sites that for very little to sometimes nothing that will give you an expert "evaluation", not an "appraisal" and even guidance in the next step to take to proceed before buying. Antiques Roadshow has a place to get that information. don't know why they don't promote this more.
